ok guys here is a topic i havent seen anywhere on this forum, a tools post.
for you guys that do your own complete setups and repairs, what are some of the "must have" tools of the trade?

as for a soldering station ive been looking at this one.
what do you guys think? is it good enough for nice soldering jobs?

You should just go to Lowes or any hardware store, check out a weller (brand) they have kits for around 20 bucks.

I have used the same Weller soldering gun for almost 40 yrs and it's still as good as new.A good quality soldering iron is much less cumbersome and easier to get into close quarters.I also have the Cruz Tools Groovetech guitar set up tool kit that has just about everything you need even a booklet on basic setup.About the only thing the kit doesn't have is a pair of needle nose pliers but they can be had for about $5.

I use an older version of this soldering station......

http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WLC100-Sol ... 820&sr=1-1

......But the one you've booked marked looks like a reall nice unit as well. I also keep a large 120-watt iron on my bench for soldering ground wires to trem claws and the like. You'll need an adequate digital volt/ohm/ammeter (Lowe's has them for around twenty bucks) plus a selection of precision hand tools for general guitar assembly/disassembly. Stew-Mac has a large inventory of traditional luthiery tools and equipment -- give them a look-see for other useful goodies.

thank you for joining in on this one.
im looking at the very one you have a link for as well.
i'll let you pick which one i'll be getting since you have
experience with this type of thing if you will. i trust your opinion completly
on this. i have a great volt meter, snapon.
most of all my tools are snapon but im gonna have to look into smaller
precision tools as well. anything you know of i might not want to forget that can be often over looked?

Well I'm familiar with the Weller as I used that model for many years while in the service. Frankly, either one is likely to do a top-notch job -- why not let the S&H charges decide the issue. Whichever is cheaper to mail to your location should be your pick.

Be sure to pick up some contact cleaner for your kit. De-oxit or any quality tuner wash will work great for cleaning switches, pots, jacks, and the like. I have a pair of watchmaker's tweezers and a nylon-bristled gun-cleaning brush that I find indispensable as well.

so it will be, shipping is the factor.

yeah de-oxit is good stuff.

nevin

matt bruck suggests hot water lightly sprayed on the neck and a bit of elbo grease.

btw, dan erlewine doesnt recommend limon oil on fretboards.

I have a small assortment of basic tools, a couple different sized phillips screwdrivers, a Radio shack soldiering gun, a small adjustable wrench, the right 2 or 3 allen wrenches, a set of wire cutters, a couple of small flat files, electrical tape, a string winder and some graphite powder ( I've got a dirty nut ) and some sandpaper. Oh, I did get a pair of the doctors roach clip thing for holding wires out of the way when I soldier. I might have about $50.00 Invested in tools and that covers it, most of the stuff has been laying around my house. 8)
