Erm, I'd politely want to challenge that last bit.

The "civilised world" is full of places that have a zero murder rate.

Cheers - C

BTW how did the folks in Lewins Cove make out with the effects of Igor?Other spots on the Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas got devastated by the hurricane but there was little or no mention of Lewins Cove.

Dad said everything at the house was fine. There were a few houses that got a bit of water in their basement but nothing serious. Part of the road was washed out but it was an area where adjacent roads made it easy to get around. They got lucky compared to most places.

Seems like here in Toronto it is becoming a little more common. Seems every weekend a couple of people get shot. That used to be very rare. But still a couple every weekend is low for a large city compared to south of the border. Just not like Newfoundland, in many ways.

It's a mixed thing to boast sbout. Newfoundland has the oldest population in Canada.....and no large cities. It also means a lack of cultural diversity and little immigration

Murder is not 'good' but but it tends to be highest in dynamic societies.

-urban populations
-ethic populations
-new arrivals (from within or outside the country)
-younger group (16 to 30)

A good chunk of Newfoundland's young people leave the province in their 'crime-commiting prime years'. Go West Young Man

A white-bread society made up of older people with no cities over a couple hundred thousand will be relatively murder free. Nice place to live if that's your thing.

.Alltunedup,my statement about the lowest murder rate was not a boast,I was stating a statistical fact.Granted we have a higher aging population but most of our young people don't "go west".I don't know when you were here last or if you ever were but we have a very rich cultural diversity and our population of international immigrants is growing in leaps and bounds. We now have on of the richest oil deposits in the world and one of the most sophisticated ocean sciences centers in the world also. All of this conbined with our world class university attracts many etnic groups and cultures so we are hardly void of cultural diversity or young people and more and more young people are choosing to stay in the province and take advantage of our growing economy.Granted our largest city St. John's only has a population of less than 200,000 but it is a busy and thriving city.It has been theorized that our low instances of murder and violent crime is the sense of community and deep religious convictions that are instilled in us as a culture to this day that plays a big part in us enjoying a pretty peaceful existance. So I quite enjoy living in our multi-cultural"white bread society".

When I was quoting my statistics I made one glaring but very interesting omission. Our province has the highest per capita long gun ownership percentage in Canada even greater than the Prarie provinces yet we have again the lowest instances of firearm deaths.Young people here especially those outside metropolitan areas are raised around guns and taught from the cradle how to handle and respect guns, have reverence for life and only to shoot what you intend to eat drilled into them from day one.Granted we have our share of poachers and interestingly in one area of our province just about 50 miles south of where I live there was a remarkable decline in caribou and moose poaching. When that was looked into they found that the large family and extended family that had been rumored to be responsible-but never caught-had moved moved lock stock and barrel to Alberta-I imagine that poaching will increase in the Ft. MacMurray area of Alberta soon though.

According to the province's Chief Medical Examiner Newfoundland has come out on top again as having the lowest homicide rate in North America and quite possibly in the civilized world. That fact has been verified by famed socioligist and criminologist Dr. Elliott Leyton whose book on serial killers "Hunting Humans" was an international best seller. Surprisingly there has been a slight increase in our murder rate in recent years and that's been attributed to the increased drug trade and organized crime that has taken a foothold here with the arrival huge revenues from our offshore oil resources. He also went on to state that the homicide rate in the U.S. has continued to drop in recent years. In the past few months there have been dozens of major drug busts here and just about all are related to organized crime.I guess what they say is true that organized crime goes wherever the money grows.

What a topic to have! The reason why there is less death in America is probably due to the recession, people have to watch their money and can't just go waste it by buying bullets and shooting people.
Peace

The reason Newfoundland has the oldest population is that people DO leave. You need to get away more. I'm from a town outside of Stephenville. 90% of my high scholol graduating class left the province. Newfoundland has a population of 500 thousand...alberta has 200 thousand Newfoundlanders. It's not old nannies who arrive in their walkers. It's 16 to 3o years olds...the prime age group to 'off' each other.

I don't think that the figures of 200,00 NLers in Alberta is quite accurate in fact that figure is very inflated.I' sure that the official statistics would be much lower.BTW welcome to the Forum,I know a lot of people from the Stephinville area Black Duck,Piccadilly,Kippens, the "Zing" etc. Youngs, Bennetts,Gallants,Cauls,Skinners etc.
