According to the province's Chief Medical Examiner Newfoundland has come out on top again as having the lowest homicide rate in North America and quite possibly in the civilized world. That fact has been verified by famed socioligist and criminologist Dr. Elliott Leyton whose book on serial killers "Hunting Humans" was an international best seller. Surprisingly there has been a slight increase in our murder rate in recent years and that's been attributed to the increased drug trade and organized crime that has taken a foothold here with the arrival huge revenues from our offshore oil resources. He also went on to state that the homicide rate in the U.S. has continued to drop in recent years. In the past few months there have been dozens of major drug busts here and just about all are related to organized crime.I guess what they say is true that organized crime goes wherever the money grows.

Hey Guitslinger, are the findings based on the actual number of murders or per capita? NF doesn't have that many people. ;o)

In the last ten years Maryland has had over 4,589 Most of those years it has ranked third highest per capita in the U.S. Most of this is do to the 300+ murders per year in Baltimore, just last week end there were six separate murders crimes in Baltimore alone.
Law abiding citizens are not allowed to carry arms to protect them selfs but all the criminals do. Shows how the stupid hand gun laws do nothing but create a society full of victims. I have no doubt if we had a must issue law crime would go down.

Last week we (Tulsa) were ranked 6th most dangerous city in the USA. Been out of control here for a long time. Gang wars, home-invasion robberies, methlabs out the kazoo. It's everywhere these days. ......... Mike

More people in this world should play the guitar (music)....that would definitely keep people out of trouble....wouldn't it?

Hi Voodoo Blues, that rate is on a per capita basis.Apparently every year the medical examiners boards and police forces release statistics related to violent crimes.BTW how did the folks in Lewins Cove make out with the effects of Igor?Other spots on the Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas got devastated by the hurricane but there was little or no mention of Lewins Cove.

Was the study only emphasize USA? What about Canada which is also part of "North America"? I would think Canada would have much lower crime than USA.

Believe or not: I've heard Iceland has the highest murder rate (per population) in Scandinavia, and even has higher murder rate than Germany (per population for the last decade).

Iceland:
Population: 320.000
Murders last nine years: 19.

If you didn't know Iceland has the world record in everything per. capitol/population

Bluesguitar I mentoned Canada as Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada's most easterly province. These statistics are compiled by medical examiners and police forces from Canada and are broken down into a state by state and province by province manner as far as I know and yes Canada has a much lower murder rate than the U.S. also.

The Country of Canada will have less Homicides the the city of Baltimore and Washington DC put together. Two cites with ridiculous highly restrictive meaningless gun laws that politicians just pass and screw law abiding citizens.

Not to mention New York and California... two states also with restrictive gun laws and high crime rates

Worst subject. Missing persons, decomposed bodies found, body parts found, unidentified bodies where the cause of death can not be determined. In a big metropolis like Chicago the "murder rate" is the gentle part of discovery. The amount it would cost to investigate a small fraction of what is actually found would take more than the cities entire budget and a large army of police and forensic scientists. Car accidents, the hit and run kind where every one in one car is a fatality and the other car drives off and is never found. The "hit" part of "hit and run" how can you prove it is planned on an expressway where the cars are all moving at 60mph? There are accidental deaths of many different types that aren't classified as murders but in actuality are the "perfect crime" examples of it. To get an idea of death in a big city visit the morgue or morgues and talk to the pathologists, although they may not be able to give you definite answers.
