These days, it's common to see female rockers singing and playing electric guitars, but before 1980, the concept almost didn't exist.

So here's a story about the first commercially successful female rocker who paved the way for the others.

In 1971, music producer Mickey Most discovered a bass playing female vocalist from Detroit. He knew the American record buying public wasn't ready for a female rocker, so he sent her to Great Britain, where she promptly had a string of Top Ten hits.

But she never made it in the States until she appeared as a rebellious young rocker named Leather Tuscadero on the smash TV comedy series, "Happy Days".

In 1979, after several episodes, she landed her first U.S. Top Ten single called Stumblin In.

Although she never had another hit, her biggest fan, Joan Jett, carried the torch in 1981 with Bad Reputation, followed up with her classic anthem, I Love Rock 'n' Roll.

So the next time you're rocking out to Avril Lavigne or Orianthi, remember the name Suzi Quatro, and the TV comedy show that started it all.

Grew up watching Suzi Quattro on Top of the Pops here in the UK in the 70s.
Up to around 6 months ago she was a regular on radio and was a nominee for "broadcaster of the year" !

A real rocker is Suzi.

Yeah Suzi Q

Her radio show was about the only thing worth listening to on radio2. It really has gone downhill since her derpature.

Yeah Chet she plays round here regularly. Mostly south Yorkshire, but she gets about.

I really cannot express how dissapointed I am with radio2 lately. I used to use that station and Suzi Q's show in particular for ear training. She'd play some really obscure 50's stuff. I'd sit there and set myself the task of sussing out how to play the song before it had finished.

Them times are now gone though. All we get from radio2 on a night time now is church music or hiphop. Even the jazz and big band swing stuff has given way to cardigan wearing crooners.

It sounds like radio2 is kind of like Little Steven's Underground Garage?

Susie was certainly hot in every way,she did a duo with some male vocalist called Tumblin' In -anyone know who the other singer was-Kenny Loggins? Also her brother Michael put off a pretty good show as he played here a couple of times in the early 80s and played the Brit-Pop style music like Flock of Seagulls ,10CC etc.

I saw Suzi open for Alice Cooper in the 70's and she was awesome. The girl could rock without a doubt and was pretty easy on the eyes way back. She was a pretty big influence on Joan Jett too. Suzi makes an appearance in the film, "Edgeplay: A Film About the Runaways" Interesting documentary.
