Now I know that every musicain has their own opininion on things and that you have to find your own thing and that you can't get an awesome sound just from one thing, but I am looking around for a good bluesy gig amp and was wondering what would some good options be? I know next to nothing about amps. The only amp that I have is one my family got me for christmass from Sears. That should explain my situation enough. I have a fender strat with those noiseless pick up in it. The same ones that come in the Eric Clapton strat. I think it also comes in american deluxes too. Anyway I am looking for a nice rich bluesy tone kind of half way between Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton, Although I do not expect to sound like either of them. The only thing that I do know for sure is that I want to get a tube amp.

I would also look into a Fender Blues Junior. Great Amp.

My opinion since you mentioned Clapton is go with a Bassman. You can get good SRV sounds and creamy Clapton out of it with the vintage vibe that a Hot Rod series can't do.

I know I'm going to be the contrarian here, because the amps mentioned sell very well, but I must try to steer you in what I feel is the right direction.

he Hot Rod Series are mediocre amps at best, plagued by early failure at worst. The Blues Jr. (I owned one) is the most unremarkable amp I've ever owned, and remained lifeless despite repeated modification.

For an authentic tone from a Fender amp, the Vintage RI series are very nice, especially the '65 Deluxe Reverb and the '59 Bassman.

But for a bluesy tone, the best current Fender production amp is the '57 Deluxe. This is a re-creation of the 5E3 circuit that has been proven on countless blues and jazz fusion recordings and performances.

These old "tweed" circuits have yet to be improved upon. The Deluxe for the stage and the 5-watt Princeton for the studio are still IMO the best sounding guitar amplifiers ever.

I will point out that buying a Fender '57 Deluxe is not the only way to get a hand-wired 5E3, and leave it at that.

I have to agree with Jim. You really can't beat a Bassman or Deluxe when it come to tube tone and bluesy OD. I'd put a Super Reverb on that list too.

I don't know alot about amps like I have already said, but I do know it is next to impossible to beat a nice tube amp.

True. The problem is finding one.

Just because it's got tubes doesn't mean it sounds good.

Simpler circuits, IMO, sound better. 5E3, 5F2a, these are the amps that defined the sound of rock.

A friend on another forum put it best: he said that he has spent hundreds of dollars and many hours trying to find a great overdrive pedal, and it turned out that all OD pedals are doing is a half-baked job of trying to do what these amps do naturally.

I'm assuming you mean the Deville 2x12. You should've went with the 4x10 setup, that would've satisfied your Bassman craving a little bit.

The Vibrolux is by far the best amp I've heard. it doesn't matter what guitar you plug in, it has never sounded better.

Twin reverb. It was designed to get the goodie out of strats.

For a thick, rich bluesy tone, like SRV and Clapton?

No, not a Twin Reverb. A Twin doesn't even begin to break up until you've reached volume levels that require an FAA permit.

I used a Pignose Crossmix 150 for about 6 years. 75 watts unless you briged the two channels with a patch chord, you could get 150 watts of solid state Pignose Punch. Very thick and Bluesy. The reverb was a little weak for my taste.

I can't really say for new amps, But when I know I'm going to be playing Serious Blues, I just take my Fender Stage 112se and Maybe a Wah Wah. For everything else I run a Fender Stage 112se and a Stage 100, or sometimes an Ibanez Tone Blaster in stereo with a MXR Chorus, Ibanez Tube Screamer, and a 535Q Crybaby.

That's my long winded way of saying the less stuff you have between your Guitar and whatever Good Amp you get The Happier your Blues will be.

PS I'm not saying you should get a cheap amp, Quality Tube amps are better than solid state for almost anything, but I drop things  so I get solid state.

I don't know what you mean by that last comment. You should be able to find an amp that gives you the "awesome sound" that you are looking for. If not, that wasn't the amp for you!

Sure, if you are looking for multiple amp sounds, you may not be able to get them all from one amp. You have to decide what kind of sound(s) you want and then start trying amps.

One thing to consider is where you are going to play and how loud, because some amps only really deliver the "sound" at high volumes. You may want one with good built-in master volume/gain so that you can get the dirty sounds (if that's what you want) at lower levels.

The "big 3" amp sounds are Fender, Vox and Marshall. Do you know which of these sounds you want?
