I went to my local GC, and traded my Superchamp XD in for a Peavey Valveking 112 (I know, big mistake, but I needed more volume and power and can't afford a Fender Deluxe). Anyway, the amp tested out really good yesterday. Bought it today, brought it to the shop, plugged it in, started to jam, then Snap, Crackle, Pop... Amp started crackling every time I tried to use it. Checked speaker for tears, swapped cables, removed pedal from chain, wiggled all the tubes, and turned off the reverb tank. Did everything I can think of and the problem is still there.. Anyone have some thoughts of WTF is going on? I'd hate to return it because it was a steal!

Take 2 EL 84s and call me in the morning.Sounds like a simple grounding problem caused by most lkely a loose wire.Did you check the inputs and are you sure that it's not in your speaker connection?IF you can't find the problem you'll have to bring it back because it's no good the way it is.If they are reasonable to deal with they'll trouble shoot it and fix it for you no charge. If not maybe you could bring it to a good amp tech,if it's an easy fix-which it sounds like it could be it shouldn't cost you too much.Good Luck with it.

Mate don't mess about. That problem could be being caused by any one of a million things from a dirty input socket to a bad valve base. Some simple to fix, others quite complex.

Just take it back and tell em to put it right. They sold you a product that is not fit for the purpose it's intended for.

BTW I think you did right, I like the basic sound of most peavey amps. Peavey's are usually rock solid too.

ok look, heres the deal. GC has a short warranty on their used stuff. ive never had a problem with them to honor their word.
i would take it to them to see what they can do. if they offer you another
amp ask them if you can offer a third option and take it to a amp tech
and see what he says before you opt for a different amp.
oh and the peavey valveking is a great amp. its a workhorse
and a solid gigging mans amp. since it was a steal you shouldhave some bucks to get it repaired if need be right?

I returned a digitech RP500 in exchange for the amp. They go for $399 new, but I found mine for $225 plus 10% off. Traded in my Fender Superchamp XD for a footswitch and a Line 6 Pocket Pod.

Yes I do. I thought I was making a great choice in something with more wattage, but it appears I'm far from being right.

peavey is good middle of the road stuff.
ive used them for yrs and yrs. cant say enough good about their gear.
they arent top of the line but they tend to get the job done and leave you relaxed about it. its gear you can count on time after time gig after gig.
i dont think theres a company out there that has a rep like peavey does with the hardiness and life span of a their amps or sound boards.
its solid stuff nuff said.

So here's the final verdict.

My friend swapped tubes, everything worked for a couple of hours, then it started over again. The amp is blowing the first preamp tube. After checking in with the Peavey forum, it appears this is a problem found in these amps on occasion with no real way to fix it. Others sent theirs off to authorized Peavey repair shop experts who couldn't fix it. So back to Guitar Center it went...

But wait! There's more!

Guitar Center sold my Fender Superchamp the very day I traded it in! So I didn't have any more credit, I didn't have any more money to spend.. OUCH!

The assistant manager called a few other GC's around the country that had the same used amp for sale. Of the few that were open and had the amp, they had the same problem with their amp! So the manager asked if there was something else I wanted. So I first said to give me their display Peavey model, which I was given a prompt NO! So while the assist. mgr went on to something else, I tried out a Bugera V22. I liked the tone, so I asked about that as an exchange. At that time, I had waited 2 hours in the store dealing with this problem. The assistant manager was still swamped, so he ended up giving me the Bugera as an even exchange for my troubles. So I got a brand new Bugera in the box in exchange for a broken Peavey. (I only had $250 in credit and the Bugera was $350!)

In the end, it paid off, but I hope the Bugera holds up. I've read some reviews that talk about reliability. So far so good, but its a little scary to think about....

Fair warning! The store knows the amp is for sale and they're selling it for $299! Its BROKEN!!! (GC in Canton Michigan)

Whew what a story!

Thanks for reading this long post!

That's the problem with used gear. You need to try and make it fail in the store. That's what I do with used amps. Bugera aka Behringer isn't known for building quality equipment. I killed a new one on the showroom floor and let out the magic smoke.

You would have been berrter off with a Jet City amp. Designed by Mike Soldano. Well made, sound way better than any Bugera and dirt cheap. I'd take back the Bugera.

If they'd had a JetCity combo, I would have. All they had was the head/cabinet set. They wanted $350 for the head alone. I had to walk away with something. The Bugera works for now..

i've got the VK212. love this amp. same problem. it's very weird. it never happens here at home. sometimes at practice. (old house). it really acted up at an outdoor gig. the tubes are fine and all connections are secure. i can't figure it out but if it continues i'll return it.
i rarely turn it up past 4. i've had mine on a stand but recently have been setting it on the floor with less pop and snap. ?????????
i'm curious to see what you find out. please keep me posted. this amp was within my budget and i'm sure there is a simple solution.

The amp didn't do it a low volumes or using the high notes. It only happens when the volume and/or gain was up and I was playing the distorted lower notes. Honestly you should get something else and save the piece of mind. Your amp costs a lot more than mine, I'm sure you can find something much better than bugera. Looked for some used if you want the 100 watt amps, but for the money you spent, I'd rather have the Marhsall Haze. But I recommended trying an amp out with a guitar similiar to your own to know what sounds best with what you do. I won't get a Peavey VK again despite the way their followers rave about them.

Since they gave me an amp at $100 off, it won't be me. Be my guest if you'd like!
