Keep saying that I will never buy another guitar, but I keep doing it. All I want is a few nice guitars and I am going to dump my junk.

I have narrowed it down (but all are different guitars in many ways)

-Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster
-Gibson R4 Les Paul (1954 Reissue with P-90 pickups and wraptail)
-Gibson R9 Les Paul (1959 Reissue)

And you will say, Nevin! all of those guitars are completely different. They are too much money! You could just buy a *insert cheaper guitar* and it would be the same. Well the point is I want quality, and I want something unique.

-Custom Shop Stratocaster
Why would I want it? Never had a Fender Custom Shop instrument.
Pros: Should be my best Fender guitar. Get what I want.
Cons: Expensive

Gibson R4
Why would I want it? Never had a guitar with P-90s. I like vintage style instruments. Never had a goldtop. Already happy with current Gibson Custom.
Pros: Looks cool, should give me some new sounds
Cons: Possibly too vintage in style (intonation horror stories)

Gibson R9
Why would I want it? Looks good. Feels good. Sounds good. Very happy with my R8.
Cons: Not worth the extra money for some looks.

Any other suggestions? Keep in mind I would rather buy a high end piece. I feel I have the perfect Telecaster, so I don't want another.

Nevin,
I'd go with an R6 over the R4. I REALLY would and it has to do with continuity of design of the bridge with later years. I think it shares the same bridge system as the R7 and later LPs.

That's if I were building an "essential" selection.
I LOVE my '06 R6!

Nevin,
Go with the P-90s. Mix things up with a totally different sound.

New is good, :)

I do like the idea of the wraptail bridge though. It has pros and cons.

Well,
Tell me what you feel the pros and cons are beyond what you've stated.
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Intonation horror stories doesn't sound very appealing to me.
Which is why I like R6 model which does have the P90s.
For me, an R7 or R8? Goldtop with PAF would be my humbucker axe.

If going for a C.S. Strat I'd go for a '54 replica too without the relic defacing on it too.The R-9 is a good choice too as the PAF type pups have a wonderfully lush tone. For a P-90 guitar I'd be more inclined to go for an Epi John Lennon Casino-you still get the P-90 sparkle that makes them so unique without the intonation issues and the action and playing dynamics of the Casino make it one the most comfortable guitars in the world to play.It also has original U.S. made Gibson pups and hardware and the build quality is absolutely flawless.BTW although you mentioned that you didn't want the such and such is cheaper opinion the Epi 59 L.P. reissue is a fabulous guitar and is only slightly over $1,000.If money wasn't an issue I'd go for the C.S. Strat otherwise the Casino.

I do not like the casino body style so that guitar is out of the question. It just doesn't fit my tastes. Nice guitar, just not for me.

As for the Stratocaster, these are hard to find (cheap) I wish they would do another similar run. I would jump on it.

It's a funny thing about my R6. It sitting on the floor instead of the wall and I played it on a BDRI that replaced my BDRI not long after I bought my BDRI. I played this very same guitar and was extremely impressed
by it's sound. I put it back thinkin' I'd like to own that and the next time
I saw it, it was back up on the wall at the very top where it remained for some 6+ months. Then the opportunity came and that was all she wrote.
I like to think of it as the special guitar. Why I don't know but there is something different about it, no doubt.
A matching goldtop with the PAFs would make the most sense to me for the next LP aquisition. Otherwise a Black Beauty would do. After that a tobacco burst LP. Not that I would buy all these but just my little list.
My next guitar I am suspecting will actually be a bass. P-bass or Jazz Bass
undecided as yet. Black and White to go with my '10 AM STND Strat.
Then maybe a Black and White AM STND Tele.

Due to the costs of these instruments plus their rapid depreciation I figure going with something that I will want to hold onto for good spell.
The next Gibson will be long while yet, if ever as I am focused elsewhere.

Well, I cannot say I am collector but it is worthy consideration at time of purchase. Are you thinking the R4 will hold it's value?
And what do you think about an 06' R6? Dp you think the value will go back up? Oddly, it's an undeclared 50th annivesary year of the original. think that might add a penny or two?

If it's me, I'd get what's most different from what I had.
So that's a Strat or Other.

For you--that might be one of the Les Pauls

Get what moves you the most.

Nevin, if you own a Tele and a Les Paul and a Strat, if it was me I would like to have a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar baritone special hh.

If you've already got a strat and a tele and a les paul, it sounds like you need to get yourself a nice bass.

There are not many R4 guitars made every year. If you can find one online, look at the serial number. You never see them produced nearly as much as R8, R9 or R0 guitars. Most R4 guitars I have seen have had a serial number below 100.

R6 is a little more popular, and thus they will be easier to find in the future. The year doesn't mean much, unless it is a good year for changes (the R9 changes all the time, for better or worse)

A good top on an R8 or R9 could make the difference in value too. All goldtop guitars look the same when new thus making them rather bland to collectors etc.

Any historic Gibson will keep some value. These are the best they offer and thus you don't see them all the time. A lot of people don't even know about them.

Makes sense.
I think I like my R6 guitar more from a player's perspective than a collector's but I can understand if your talkin low numbers and the uniqueness of the design. The tone was what sold me, the color was an
added benefit. Beside all that, I am hoping to pass mine down to my grandson, some day.

I will just sell a kidney.

 that would be the 3rd or 4th kidney you've sold this year Nevin. How do you grow them back so fast? Unless the legend is true. " Nevins metabolism, like his guitar playing, is ten times faster than the average Guitar player." Yes Nevin again you have impressed us all
