The book you're thinking of (or, not thinking of, to be more precise) is called "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." And no, "Zen Guitar" isn't anything like it.

The former is a novel of personal discovery on a road trip and a layman's book of philosophy (the author once said that despite its title, "it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It's not very factual on motorcycles, either.").

The latter is a book that attempts to give guitar players a new perspective on making music in order to help them be more creative.

Save the eyeroll.

There's a website that covers the book and it's philosophy.

http://zenguitar.com

And a new book that is called The Book of Six Strings done by a different author, but it sounds like it follows on to Zen Guitar.

I will have to get a copy of the first book and see how I like it - I'm interested in different ways to get myself to practice and get better at guitar playing.

There is a 3rd book that is also very good called "Zen and the Art of Guitar, A Path to Guitar Mastery." bu Jeff Peretz. An Alfred Publication. It comes with a CD and also offers actual excerises and lessons to work on as well as zen like copy througout. I just ordered the ZG and 6 Strings. Can't hurt to be more zen like in anything.
