A friend of mine attended a Robben Ford Clinic last week. Robben recommended reading the book Zen Guitar. Has anyone ever checked it out?

Yes my wife got it as a Christmas present for me. Here is a quote:

"No matter how adept you are with the guitar already, wearing the white belt here means you have agreed to set aside all knowledge and preconceptions and open your mind to learning as though for the first time. [...] Students here receive one belt and one belt only: the white belt. Those who put in the time, training, and effort will find their belt getting so soiled that eventually it turns black of its own accord."

Very Cool! I have checked out the ZG website and I am really liking the way it sounds. I will probably go to the bookstore and look it over. But it sounds like something that I could really get into.

I think so too. I believe that music does come from the heart and if I understand correctly what I have read so far ZG teaches that.

It doesn't really teach much about music, if you approach it properly. It teaches the first steps toward Zen mind by way of playing the guitar. Surprisingly, Zen practice can make one a better musician, but not if that is your goal.

The western idea of things coming "from the heart" is not an idea that you'll find in Zen practice.

I have Zen Guitar, I thought it was a great book, it really helped me get over those brick walls that we all seem to hit from time to time in playing and learning, it also helped me take a better approach to practicing. Those of you that have Zen Guitar should also check out The Book of Six Strings

I have read about 1/2 the book thus far. I will probably read it several times. It is fascinating reading to me.

There is also a second book called "The Book of Six Strings" that I will be getting.

Excellent book. I recommend any guitar player to read it. Gotta have an open mind and be spiritual though to understand it. It can take your guitar playng to another level... helped me get in touch with my inner spirit to allow what I was really feeling about music out in the open.

That sounds like an amazing book. I already use meditation as a tool whenever I get stuck on something. I bet I could get into that.
