a thread about gear  you make me smile again, last gig two other bass guitar players one with a Music Man bass and the other with a Fender jazz bass used my rig, I probably shouldn't say this but they sounded good.

LOL :D I let anyone play my rig as long as they respect it. It's great to hear what a different technique and person can make it sound like.

My guitar tech makes my Strat sound like the sweetest Strat in the world! When I play it, it just sounds "blah".

Maybe because I suck? Nah... he must be using magic.

In an early incarnation of my current band (the Screamin' Armadillos) the other guitarist and I would switch guitars during the breakdown of a song I wrote called "Travis County Line"...the song is reminiscent of a Vaughan Brothers jam, for sonic reference. We didn't just switch guitars, we actually played the other guy's rig--axe to amp.

I was playing my '95 MIM Telecaster with a P90 in the neck position and a stock Tele bridge pickup, through a TS9 Tubescreamer, a Leslie Simulator and my '63 Reissue Vibroverb.

He played a '84 G&L F-100 with a Gibson PAF humbucker neck pickup and a Dimarzio shredder/metal bridge pickup (don't know the model) and a couple of Boss pedals into a Roland JC120. (I hate that amp, BTW. What do you call a thousand Jazz Chorus amps at the bottom of the ocean? A good start!)

Incredibly, we still sounded just like ourselves when we were playing each other's guitar...I sounded like me playing a hard rocker's rig, and he sounded like himself playing a blues player's rig.

Yes, my rig sounded different--it had a different pilot. He also couldn't figure out how I got some of the sounds out of his rig that I did (and he is a much more accomplished guitarist); once again, it was the driver, not the car.

Of course, playing ability is necessary, and different guitars, effects & amps will change the sound...but all things considered,

the tone is in the hands, brothers and sisters!

Don't give all the credit to the ability of the other player. If you could back off to the back or middle of the room and listen to your rig with yourself playing it, you might like what you hear just as well.

Happens to me all the time..

Good thing is, the guy is our other guitar player. I'm always amazed at how different we both play a guitar, and we both seem to admire each other's style. That's when you know you have a good thing going. 8)

I enjoy listening to someone else playing my guitar through THEIR amps. Helps keep me from dipping into my gear fund.

I like to encourage others to play my gear but oftentimes they don't.

I had one friend with an SG who constantly ripped on my gear becauseit was all producing $@!&$% sounds... he meant my Duncan Strat and my Ibanez 550... I got rid of him within a year because he was an arse!

But my guitarist friend whom I bought the Ibanez from made some videos with it before he sold it to me so here there are:

its not everyones cup of tea but just listen for a while until he gets into it

I love my JC-50. I swapped the speaker, and it made a big difference. Sounds great!

It can be a double edge sword
Sometimes it depresses me watching someone else play my gear and make it do things it has never done

But it does feel good seeing someone play my gear and thinking, if my guitar could talk, it would be asking for me back

the roland JC is one of the baddest SS amps ever made.

When I was younger I let other guitarists play on my gear to see if it sounded good. Since I cannot find any people to jam with, it does not happen unless I take it to the guitar shop.

I agree that different people will get different tones out of your equipment. If you like the tones, I recommend you play through the same type of amp to see how you sound through it before purchasing one to recreate the tones you heard.
