Hello everybody,

I was just curious to see what people are doing to develop their hammer ons and pull offs. I am working on mine right now by incorporating them into my pieces of music. I was wondering if anyone wanted to share some great exercises for developing hammer ons and pull offs. If so, I would be happy if you shared some with us. Thank you.

As with any guitar techniques practice is the most important aspect. Andy Aledort has some great demonstrations of different guitar techniques and I imagine that he has demos of pull offs and hammer ons.He has videos on Youtube as far as I know and does instructional videos for and included in monthly Guitar World Mag.

Practice, practice and more practice. I reckon that you figured out the basics, so from there just develop efficiency and add some of your style (ex how you flick your finger to sound the note at the pull-off, or how you attack the strings on hammer-on).

btw welcome to the forum

Well...since you asked.

I do fingertip push-ups and hand-grip exercises, stretching and then I play for a while just normally. As a rule I try and keep my fingers in a balanced a ready position, no more than 1/2 an inch off the fretboard (economy of motion). I get my technique and fretboard exercises for hammer-ons and pull-offs from Pumping Nylon by Scott Tenant (Great book if one is looking to get into classical). I probably spend 10-15 minutes doing this kind of stuff, and then I just play. ^^

As for an exercise, go on any string and hammer on every fret ascending and descending up the fretboard (1.2.3.4.2.3.4.5.etc...) When hammering on, try and keep your fingers relaxed and free of tension until it's that finger's turn. As soon as you sound the note, spring off of it and then proceed to the next one. Once you get to the higher frets, then do pull offs descending down. The goal is not to go fast, but to keep the fingers independent of one another and make each not sound clear and concise.

In my case I took about a 5 year break from the guitar and focused on the banjo.
