Tell me about necks, how many types of neck are there? how do we describe them. I have seen people shred on Fender like Strat necks very swiftly. Pros like Jason Becker, Impellitteri, Norifumi Shima, Gentaro Satomura, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Kotzen etc. sweeps through like a hurricane.

Yet we have this thin necks on RGs called fast/quick necks? Do they really serve the purpose? The thinner the neck the faster we go? How come it doesn't work that well for me? I actually feel uncomfortable with thin necks, actually prefers the feel of the thicker rounded neck. Anyone knows the significance?

Does scalloped fretboard have significant effect? I've heard ppl saying better control, better vibrato Oh really? or just hype? doesn't feel that way to me I get goose bumps holding them feels awfully weird like fretting on a shellfish.

As far as control is concerned it feels like moving in a car with wheels that needs balancing. A rocking boat sensation :) Oh yeah speaking of fretboard does the neck or body have more influence on the guitar tone?

In this opinion, it's all what one is used to and how combination skilled-talented-accomplished-practiced-coordinated-competent-enthusiastic the player is.

For many decades, hotshot jazzers have been all over (at truly amazing speed) the old, fat necks on Gibsons, Guilds, D'Angelicos, D'Aquistos, Benedettos...

...not to mention what classical and flamenco players do on wide, flat fingerboards and thick necks.

I think it is mostly personal preference. At least for me. I like the old style C shape necks. They feel more solid in my hand and they match my acoustics neck profile.

I play an EJ Strat with the C neck and a Amer Deluxe Tele with C neck. Both have quarter sawn maple necks. Very solid and stable piece of wood. May give a little more sustain. Who knows?

I also prefer fret boards that are a little wider at the nut because my fingers are kind of fat and it makes for cleaner cording. As far as speed goes, I can't tell any difference.

Some guys that play "thumb over the top" might prefer a thinner V shape.

I think speed is more down to thumb possition and practice.

All them players you mention have the thumb low down the back of the fretboard (Django included). Slower players usually have their thumbs higher up the board or wrapped over the top.
