I really LOVE and adore mark knopflers crisp tone on his strat, and iam 100% sure he dosent use any pedals to get it, its just his pickups and amp set-up... just wondering if iam right-on? :P

He had his own signature strat a few years ago, here is some more info.

http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0117800815

He uses a set of 3 texas specials, but the unique tone he gets is because he uses the in-between pickup choices a lot. position 2 and 4 for neck + mid and Bridge + mid.

A good chunk of Knopflers tone comes from his finger style of picking.

He also uses a lot of compression, which makes it critical to play clean. He's one of the cleanest around.

Hubert Sumlin, Jeff Beck, Derek Trucks also play with fingers rather than a pick. Very different tone and ADSR characteristic compared to a pick, especially clean. You don't notice it so much overdriven.

Compression is used way more than you realize on all your fave guitarist recordings. It squeezes down the dynamics and can add brilliance and sparkle to a sound a lot more musically and pleasing than just EQ. It also allows it to sit in the mix better without all the big transients. But if you play sloppy, it will amplify all your little slop noises.

ADSR is Attack/Decay/Sustain/Release--the 4 major characteristics controlling how a note is struck, and then dies. Music is a violent discipline.

I think it should be noted he doesn't always play with his fingers, just the majority of the time.
