So I have my first ever guitar with P-90's in it. Currently, it has some Seymour Duncan P-90's (SP90-3 "Custom" bridge, SP90-2 "Hot" neck). They sound decent but a little bit shrilly at times. I am looking for a replacement that is more vintage sounding. I looked at Kinmans first because Kinman makes what I believe to be the best pups, but his are $310 and out of my price range. Lollars are my second choice.

What other P-90's have you tried or would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

My Epi John Lennon 65 Casino has the Gibson p-90s on it and they sound just like the original which is the tone I want.I wouldn't try any others as I'd be afraid that something in the tone would change. My 08 natural MIC Casino has the Epi P-90s although they don't have quite the tonal response of the 65 Casino they are brilliant pups and the only thing I'd consider putting in the MIC are the Gibson P-90s as I love the sound of them.

I actually gave some thought to getting the same guitar after seeing you post about it. Man for $499 that is a whole lot of guitar. Let us know about how killer it is when you get it!

I was surprised to see that the Fralins were as expensive or a little more than the Lollars.

I love the P90 tone. Specially when they are pushed hard.

I'm also interested to here peoples thoughts on P90's. Good call BCB.

I'm thinking about replacing the humbuckers on my Epi SG with some...

Image

I had a go on a Gary Moore BFG sigy Les Paul a few years back and that had a P90 in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge.

Image

The P90 sounded awesome! I'll have to find out what that was.

I have to say though for a £900 guitar the neck pup routing on the one I played was shockingly bad. Can't believe it made it pass the QC guys. Even I could have done a better job than that and I'm a real wood butcher! :D

Cheers!

Andy

Hi all: for those my side of the pond Bare Knuckle Pickups do some very nice vintage flavored P90s. The BKP-90 is the one I've tried and it was creamy tasting!

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/products.html

Those are available Stateside too, but very expensive over the water. Fairly costly at home for that matter, too...

The good news pricewise in the UK is that Wizard Pickups also offer some good quality P90s:

http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/shop.asp?category=P90

Not only that, but for little more money they will custom build pickups to order. So you can have exactly the specs of your dreams:

http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/content. ... %20Bespoke

They also offer international service, though shipping will add to the final charge.

Cheers - C

Before replacing the pick-up, you may want to try some other electronic options. There are some caps/resistor set ups that smooth out some tone issues without losing the original pick-up value.

Mojo-tone, guitar electronics, mouser electronics all have some products that may help.

My luthier also suggested that. I am friends with the guys at mojotone and it is in my home town so I will have to go check with them and see what they say. Thanks for the input!
