hey guys its been a while since my last post. My life has been really crazy lately, anyway, I paid for my fender strat to be set up for 12's. I always thought that he never did do it, because I couldn't tell a differencce between the 10's and the 12's he said he put on. After I put in some new pick ups I put 12's on, and my suspitions were confirmed. That is freaking bull.

Bummer. I hate when people try to do what they want with work on your guitar. Its like, Hey, it's my guitar not your, this is what I want done, don't tell me what I should do or how things should be done. But anyways, 12;s are pretty heavy duty. How do you like them. I haven't gone any higher than 11's on mine and those are big enough for me.

I really haven't been able to play with them on my guitar that much, due to the guy ripping me off, butt from the little bit that I did play was pretty nice. I could tell a big difference in tone. Althought it is a little tough to tell due to when you have that heavy of a string on a guitar that's not set up for it, your neck will bow and, if you do have a whammy bar, your brige won't be flush with the guitar. When your neck is bowed like that the further up the neck you go the more out of tune it gets. That and my action is like 4 times what it should be. So I can really truely say what I think about them yet. However, I am taking it to IRC Music and having them set it u for me. So I will be able to tell you what I think after I get it back. I don't think that it will take over a couple of hours.

Who did you take it to first time?

It was a local music store called Mooresville Music. It is just a really small place that I used to go to all the time. The key word in that sentence is [b]used to go. Although now I take my guitar needs to IRC Music in greenwood, Indiana.

It has been a while since my last post. It has been hell in my life the past few months. I just found out that my girlfriend might have a brain tumor and abunch of crap like that, it's been rough. Anyway, Now that I have had a chance to play my guitar with the 12's on it, WOW. It feels like it was made for me. I can't get enough of it. Although lately I haven't gotten to play that much, It is awesome. I would highly recommend that any guitarist that is not realyl happy with their tone to get your guitar set up for 12's and put them on. Also I threw in some new pick ups. They are the ones that come in the Eric Clapton sig. strat, Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pick ups, wow they get really nice tone. I love both my guitar with 12's and those pick ups.

If the action is different, it sounds like the tech forgot to also adjust the truss rod to help offset the pull of the heavier strings on the neck. I think once you get through the tech BS, you'll enjoy heavier strings. I have been playing 11s for almost 10 years now, and it results in better tone and sustain once you get used to it. You may have to practice a bit to get your bends back to normal, if you do bends.

Changing your string and pick gauge are 2 of the cheapest ways to dramatically alter your tone.

Beginner questions here: How do string gauge and type of pick affect tone? And are the heavier gauge strings harder to hold down? A friend recommended I put 10s on my guitar, and I use a heavy pick most of the time.

String gauge affects tone big time, depending on how big you go of course. The bigger the string, the more difference you'll notice, you might not tell hardly any difference going from say, 9's to 10's or 10's to 11's (except for the playability of'em). But on the other hand, going from 9's to 12's or 10's to 13's will make it noticeable. Your tone will seem thicker (or heavier), you'll have more bite with pick attack. Big strings take some getting use to, when you first start with'em, it might seem like all the technique and style you've learned just went out the window.

Pros and cons of big strings:
_______________________
Cons:

1. Barre chords seem impossible.

2. Your fingers start to hurt quicker and more often.

3. You'll notice your speed has diminished some.

4. Frets wear out quicker.

Pros:

1. They make your fingers tougher, stronger and they'll make you play harder. These are good things if you ask me.

2. String breakage is something that doesn't happen as often anymore.

3. They seem to hold tune better (from what I've noticed).

4. Tone

5. Sensitivity (for the simple fact that your pickups have more to...well...pick-up. This also gives better results vs. raising the pickups with normal strings and ending up with mud.)

6. More bite from the pick attack

7. Your "bottom-end" will tend to stay cleaner as you drive your amp more. The top will to, but not as good. (In my opinion this was the greatest thing about Stevie Ray Vaughan's tone.)

Every guitar player around could add to this list or take from it. Strings are strictly personal preference.

If you're just starting out, work your way up to the bigger strings is my suggestion, or if you can't wait, get an acoustic guitar and play on that and your electric with the big strings to help you get stronger fingers. I like the bigger strings cause there is more metal moving over the pickups, so to me it helps make your tone bigger and meatier. Plus that, and I have only broke 1 string in the last few years, and I am not a light picker.

Changing picks also alters your sound, and technique, but can have a dramatic impact on your sound due to the difference in how the string reacts to a different gauge pick. Its hard to explain, but just try some different gauge picks, and you should be able to hear and feel a bit of a difference.
