thats probably one of the best way to learn. If you find someone into a different style to you, you get to learn improv better and learn new stuff from another genre :)
I've always found in bands no matter what level the other guitarist is you can still learn off each other. :)

The story of my life,in the area I live in there's not many blues players, and even though I'm no SRV,...I ain't no wannabee either...and I can't stand hearing somebody brag about playing the blues, and then when you hear it you don't know how they came to that conclusion.

well pretty much everyone is better than me so I take advantage of the opportunity to jam with experience and advanced players whenever I can. I learn a lot just watching them and also from their advice and tips. I have progressed enough to where I can play some decent little solos over blues progressions and my strength is that I can actually bang out blues rhythm really well so that we can go back and forth taking turns soloing and playing rhythm.

I can't find people period. Everyone around here is a tire kicker and nobody ponies up when the time comes.

I do some studio work. Here in Green Bay, not many like my type of music, but there's nothing wrong playing different genres, especially when someone pays you to lay track(s) down :) When I do go back to NYC I jam with some old bandmates, old friends, etc that play heavy music.

I look for gys that are better than me. It forces me to get out of my comfort zone and really develop and play. Nothing like it..I don't want to be playing with guys my level. I want to constantly improve my playing.

The more diversified you are the more people you'll have to jam with. I don't do much jazz, not because I don't want to, I just never studied it much, but I jam with tons of different musicians. From harp players to trombone and other horn players, keyboardists, lowbow, violinists, to guys who do Zydeco with squeeze boxes and ton's of percussionists. Man it's fun. Just open your mind and spread your wings a little. Don't just limit yourself to one type pf music. I'm a Bluesman at heart but still a musician deep in my soul.

I'm really fortunate that Houston has a really nice music scene. It's no Austin, but I have no problem finding people who are as good or better than me and who are willing to let me jam with them. I always like jamming with people better than me, you learn a lot and get a lot of inspiration to practice.

Since I can't sing and since I have extreme difficulty finding people close to my age who can actually play blues I don't have my own band. For blues I've made some friends at open mics and I float between bands when their usual guitarist is out doing something else. I am in an alternative rock band now. It's not really my style per say, but it's really good experience and the singer gives me room to add as much of my style as I can to it. But really, to be a musician with steady gigs you have to play a little bit of everything.

Back in school, whenever somebody would want to jam and I showed up with my guitar, they'd ask me if I knew any Matchbox 20, or No Doubt. I'd ask them if they knew who Jeff Beck was, and the response I usually got was "the guy that sings 'Loser'." Then I'd grab my guitar case and leave. That was dumb! Had I not been so stubborn, I could have improved my skills at a faster pace. Looking back, I probably missed a lot of good jam sessions by being so closed-minded. Just my story, take it at face value.
