The National played the Riviera tonight, sold out show, I was visiting my Bro at the Kinetic Playground just up the street and asked another Bro of ours who they were and he said "they are one of the best bands around right now". I just listened to a couple of their u-tubes and I'm a bit worried that I don't get it, so any fans here and if so what part of the songs should I be listening to so I think that they're the best too.

Solid B !! If the shoe don't fit, it ain't your shoe. Everything is personal and relative to your own particular taste. Don't look for something you think 'should' be there. If it ain't there.....it ain't there.

Very apt.
It's shoegazer music. I don't get it either.

Whew, thanks, I really thought I had lost touch for a moment. Niki, Rhumba, it is uncanny because when I was listening to them I actually was staring at my shoes instead of my guitar

Maybe were just getting old  a lot of pretend anguish portrayed by the singer, didn't get it myself, someone likes em though  all about airtime and getting maximum exposure, good luck to them I suppose.

Political and social support
The band supported Barack Obama's presidential candidacy in 2008. In July of that year, the band designed and sold a t-shirt featuring Obama's image above the words "Mr. November," a reference to both their song from Alligator and the month of the U.S. presidential election. All proceeds were donated to Obama's campaign.[25]

Their song "Fake Empire" was used by the Obama campaign at many high-profile events during the election. On August 28, 2008, "Fake Empire" was used as the soundtrack for a video shown at Invesco Field during the Democratic National Convention.[26] On November 4, 2008, "Fake Empire" was used again as part of a video shown in Grant Park prior to Barack Obama's victory speech on election night.[26]

On October 16, 2008, The National played a rally for Barack Obama on Fountain Square in their hometown of Cincinnati with The Breeders. Buses for early voting were available before the show to take voters to the Hamilton County Board of Elections. On February 3, 2009, The National played at a benefit show for Philip Glass' Tibet House at New York's Carnegie Hall
