Guys anyone has thought about quitting? you know... pressure from work, parents and gig schedules?

sometimes you might not have time to practice because of work and business trips, parent's pressure to stop coming home so late at night, and lousy gig organizers who would say you're on then suddenly scrambles the whole thing..

I've thought about it before. Especially when I was teaching myself at first. I'd run into a brick wall and it would just frustrate me that I couldn't figure out how to get around it. Getting a teacher and taking lessons every week really helped me out there.

My schedule right now is absolutely insane. I have a part time job, I'm in my senior year of high school preparing for college and I'm gigs regularly not to mention band practice. It's really cutting into my practice time. And when I do have a day off I have a hard time practicing because I don't know where to begin! But I try to practice at least for an hour or two every day. A little is way better than nothing.

I still get discouraged sometimes, especially after a bad gig. But in a way that's a good thing, it makes you go back to basics and squeeze in as much practice time as you can. I think everyone, even the pros, can get discouraged. You're never going to be as good as you want to be on guitar, but as long as you turn the discouragement into an incentive to practice you'll keep getting better. :)

At one point while on the road and holed up in a ratty
hotel in Newark for 9 days, the thought crossed
my mind.

You see a lot of things when on the road playing roadhouses
and a lot of it is not...um....glamorous!

I did. Back in the mid-'70s I sold all my gear for book and tuition money for college. I remember thinking my rock 'n' roll days were over and I better grow up and start thinking about a real job.

I've regretted that day everyday since.

No, unfortunately just a dreamer am I. Reality is, I have been forced to not play a few times, and, that isn't a good feeling, so, if possible, when you get a little down on your playing progress, think about what it would feel like if it was taken from you and you will come to appreciate your gift perhaps.

i actually did quit for a while.

from 66 to around 78 i played in bands. i decided to get out because all the clubs were turning to disco, and people were using dj's for weddings. it put a major hurt in the live music scene.

i was also tired of passing up hanging out with my friends because i had gigs on friday. i quit the band i was in, and hardly even played for over 20 years.

1 day in 2002, a friend called and asked me to sit in with his band. i practiced my head off, and had a riot playing again. it wasn't enough to make we want to do it full time, but who knows what happens next.

thats one line my drummer always tells me..

Well in my case my parents are the only place... and well a little factor regarding practice because my parents won't let me practice after work and go on gigs... sometimes I feel like a little puppet... WTH

never! it's my passion. i love music. i'm a decent player at best and have only done one studio recording. if i added up all the money i've made playing music, i might be able to get a cup of coffee at starbucks. (not that i would). but i don't care.
these days i listen to such a wide variety that it never gets stale or boring. plus, the band forces me to practice.
don't quit. you might regret it down the road.

How old are you? I can understand parents not wanting their kid spending several nights a week in bars.

I'm extremely lucky that my parents are supporting me. And about 75% of my extended family. The other 25% think I'm crazy, but I really don't care. :P

never quit ! i am 44 and have been playing only a year i would give anything to have been playing all this time for the last 20 years , its not just so maybe you will be in a band and hit it big (although that would be cool) its about having something that no one can take away from you , expressing yourself through something that makes other people happy, you dont know down the road where it will take you !

Not really, though sometimes in the distant past, many thousands of times, it got frustrating; lack of progress, the aforestated job, family, life...pressures.

But now, no thoughts of quitting. None. 'Will continue playing until it is no longer physically possible.

'Have come to terms about not progressing much. Philosophically, now it's more about the peaceful love of life, spirituality, music, the guitar...veritably everything.

Interesting, "growing up" never stops, if you stay open and allow yourself to keep taking the universe in.
