Just because something is marketed does not mean it will sell. Anyways. reason why the Mustang isn't showcased is very much because it was a student model (Along with the Duo Sonic and Musicmaster) back in the day. It was an economy model aimed for students who couldn't afford a top of the line Fender but still wanted quality features within their budget. Being an economy model meant it was not designed nor engineered to the extent the Strat and Tele were. Eventually production halted when Fender moved their student guitar production to the Squier brand.

When the punk/grunge whatever the f*** you want to call it movement came about (seriously, there's like 100 different names), those artists wanted pre or early cbs quality instruments. But even then Pre-CBS Stratocasters and Telecasters were freakin expensive, well over $1000 dollars, while an early mustang, duo-sonic, jaguar, jazzmaster or musicmaster could be had for much much less. Why all the punk/grunge bands of the era played those models.

Basically with the Squier brand Fender can produce $100 Stratocaster and Telecaster style guitars, which are the models most people want to buy. The Mustang is just a reproduction for those who like the mustang, same reason Gibson still makes Melody Makers. Marketing multiple lines of Mustangs would be stupid because, as I said before, the Jaguar has the same scale length and feel with a superior design.

IMO DK are overrated though... theyre good, but not my cup o' tea... i dont really think i should the wipers there though, not because they arent good, but because their sound goes beyond punk in almost every way except vocals. dont know why i dont have any black flag or germs in there either.....

no. they didnt. that is quite possibly the most common mistake people make. people forget the stooges... THEY were among the first punk bands (i dont know the "underground" scene of the day to well so i cant say THE FIRST)... the ramones took the blueprint they (and others) had created, made the songs shorter, wrote less lyrics, and gigged like mad. someone (i would assume that asinine rag Thr Rolling Stone to be one of the culprits...) decided that since the term punk was coined after the stooges that they didnt fit into the genre....

Also, i just dont like the ramones that much... i like a couple of the songs on the first album but i dont like that at least 60% of their work consists of 4-6 lines of lyrics repeated several times in bout 2 minutes. but every punk band is quite different from the rest (well, the old ones were....), and each one is something of an "aquired taste", so to each his own.

I was just about to mention The Stooges ^^ Raw Power especially set the trend for punk bands to follow. And although Pete Townshend might not like it, The Who was also a huge influence on many if not all punk artists.

I don't need a Mustang with humbuckers.
I have humbucker solidbody covered with other guitars--but for those who don't, or who have singlecoil soildbody covered, yeah it's be cool.

One difference in the Mustang is the Vibrato--I love the Mustang vibrato.
