So I just got a text from my friend and lead singer saying that him and our other guitarist felt that it would be for the best if they went on as a twosome :-(

Kinda wish they could have done it to my face but oh well.

To be honest I could see it coming. I knew they had been meeting up and jamming without me. I was thinking of saying something anyway until they dropped this bomb on me.

I think it might be for the best anyway. I'm really into classic rock and blues whereas they're not. I'm going to university next year so hopefully I'll find some like minded people.

They are two of my best friends, and at least they told me instead of just pushing me out, it was still early days anyway. I feel pretty crappy just now but I hope it'll come to pass.

And I hope I get a recording contract before they do :-)[/b]

Just remember, that things happen for a reason, and they have a way ofsorting themselves out.

Who knows how this will play out, but always look to turn a negative into a positive.

If you're going to a university next year, don't worry about being booted. Just keep practicing and playing what you like. Then when you get to university, you'll find that everyone is either some sort of musician, artist, writer, or poet in college, so you will have many people to choose and try to work with then... 8)

I just found out that last week they recorded five new songs, re-recorded the three I played in, set up a new MySpace account with a new name. Plus they've got a new logo with "let's start again" as a footnote.

I want to stay friends but i think it might take some before I feel totally comfortable with them.

Mate you play in enough bands and it's going to happen from time to time.

Trust me it's better that they let you go than tried to carry on in a situation that wasn't working. That is a lot more painfull I can tell you from the recent experience of quitting my last band. Enjoyed the band, enjoyed the gigs. Through a personal conflict with someone in the band, things had gotten very uncomfortable over time, so I quit. Played the last gig with em (after I'd told em) literaly fighting back tears of frustration.

I was sacked from a punk band years back. I made some silly remark about goths being style over substance characters. The bassist had just married a goth. Used his influence over the kid drummer to vote me out. I drove 30 miles for the privelidge of being told to leave.
I'd have prefered a text message, email, phonecall, fax, carrier pigeon or even a Doris Stokes message from beyond the grave than a waste of my time.

It happens, it's likely nothing to do with your abilities and more to do with personality clashes.

Don't give it a 2nd thought mate.

Everything happens for a reason. Don't be down, be inspired and remember that there are only 2 kinds of music. Yours and other people's!

Texting you was low and shows no respect, they don't deserve to have you in their band. If your heart is in music, this won't slow you down a bit, it'll just be a little bump in the road that you'll look back on and laugh about one day. Best of luck to you at University and in music.

Maybe this is a generational thing, but texting to a bandmate that your services will no linger be needed is, in my mind cold and heartless.

And a bit cowardly to say the least.

Make sure you have all your intellectual property removed and copied from them (Any songs you helped write or ones you played on), then wish them the best of luck, and then move on.

Friendship is one thing, BUT BUSINESS IS BUSINESS, you must always keep them separate.

i have to agree about the text thing. i don't care for that too much.
i understand about you being bummed right now. i would be too. my advice would be to chalk it up as just one more of those life experiences. you'll find more musicians to play with if that's what you want to do. i think we all have to play some stuff that we don't necessarily enjoy sometimes. maybe you'll find a more suitable group.
about staying friends. i couldn't. i hold grudges forever. it's a curse. maybe you won't have that problem.

Sounds to me like you need to figure some Original stuff out and try with a classic rock or blues set up :) or if you're not 100% with that then find a tutor and invest a little time into becoming the best :)

Im on the Tutor Route atm  but thats because I actually only picked up and began learning 20 months ago now :) the progress is worth it in the long haul!

Either way make sure to keep us updated we all want to know what you decide to do :)
