Keeping it clean is one thing, obsessing over it is another. I guess something can said for a guitar being "Road Worn". One in this condition just looks like it's ready to be played.

So you buy a new guitar off the wall at Mom & Dad's Music Store. To what extreme, if any do you go to keep that new guitar in pristine condition?

The last guitar I bought was only on the wall for 22 minutes, and I was the only customer who played it. A couple employee's complained they didn't get a chance to play it.

Do you clean it and wax it down after each use?

You betcha, every time. It is one of the most expensive items I own, and I want to protect my investment, and to me a clean guitar plays better.

Do you cover your belt buckle when you play it?

The buckle I use is the same one I use at work, it's leather covered to avoid scratching a customers fender (Car), wile some think these scares add too the mojo, car owners have a very different opinion of a scratch in there cars finish.

Is it carefully stored in the case when you aren't playing it?

It didn't come with a hard case, just a soft case, so I went and bought a case for it, and it's in it right now after playing it for hours today.

I can remember going into music stores years ago and having to put on an apron with a sheepskin fur front just to play a guitar-and NO PICKS!

There are some places like that still today.

Now at Guitar Centers, you can take down the highest priced PRS off the wall and bang away. Or have a jam session with your buddies, all playing the high end LPs and Custom Shop Strats. Then the next guy pays full price for a "used" guitar.

And the reason I will never buy a new guitar from them, it's just wrong IMHO. I was down there just the other day, and they had a collection of "scratch and dents" all discounted...sad.

I try to keep my new stuff new looking, but my '89 LP looks like it's been through a battle zone, and my '04 Strat has it's share of dings and scratches. You can try and keep it new for a while, but I prefer to let it relic on it's own. Granted, it's easier to resell if it looks new, and you really don't get what's it's worth when you do a trade in, so either way-what works for you?

No matter how hard you try, you will get the ding or two, unless you just do not play it. I usually will touch up a scratch if I get one with touch up paint. I once bought a 1966 Fender Mustang, blue and it was beat to hell, the case looked brand new, like the guitar never saw the inside of it.
The first thing I did was to take it apart, steam out the dents and refinish it (With lacquer paint of the correct color) and it came out great, well to me. The only down side was the Fender lable was the old style small print with the dash lines and all I could buy at the time was the newer large print one (I bought it at the Fender plant's part desk) and so it had the newer label. It was 1980, but I still feel it was a better guitar after i refinished it. I did leave the board alone, it just felt way to good and the frets were still good and the chrome was unrusted. and yes, I left the original stamp date on the end (Nov 1966) It had a date, I just cant remember it for sure anymore.
I guess I feel the smash, sand and dent craze is just a fad and will soon go away.

I care about mine. I wipe it down good when finished, keep it in the case. Use a stand instead of leaning it up against the amp. Never use polishes, I've heard pros and cons about the polish affect on the woods.
