That explains it. John Mayer just doesn't seem like the type to naturally put wear and tear on a guitar for some odd reason.

He does have one Strat that I know of that he has put some good wear and tear on. I think its a 50th Anniversary Strat that he plays a lot. It was a lot of Pick Stratches above the pick guard. But other than that he has so many guitars Im sure he is not wearing them out too quickly.

I know its not the Rory Gallagher but it does look like it. Its a John Cruz custom shop. Rory Gallagher Strat on Top John Mayers is on the bottom with a couple of his other favorites.

I think this has come up before and the answer last time was that it's the same type of relicing as on the SRV model but black.

That Rory Gallagher strat is FANTASTIC - my brother bought one and it sounded unbelievable. The neck is a work of art and the TONE......!!!!!!!!

They are fairly expensive :(

but not like vintage strats

That's exactly what I thought, but, I wasn't 100% sure. Was the SRV replica made by John Cruz? AND does the guitar have his Big Dipper pickups?

I believe that John's black strat is a relic of a 62 reissue. Notice the absence of a skunk strip along the back of the neck and the truss rod adjustment gap at the top of the pick guard in the center. Hope I could help.

It's not the same relic as SRV's #1 either. The reason these models are all so similar in relicing is that the custom shop tries to recreate the correct areas in which a guitar would naturally get reliced. The edges of the contours, where the forearm rubs, above the pickguard from scratching, etc. If you naturally beat up any guitar for long enough, it will most likely turn out with wear in places similar to SRV #1 or the Rory Gallagher strat.

It's a John Cruz masterbuilt, and as far as we know has similar electronics to the Big Dipper setup found in his production sig models. Low output pickups, scooped midrange, etc. He has this setup put in most of his strats. The custom shop even rigged his Crossroads strat with a rosewood neck and his electronics for the Good Morning America performance with Clapton. I think that has a lot to do with why his tone seemed better than Claptons in that performance.

I also noticed that there was his signature on the back of the headstock... maybe because he designed it?

I think because in terms of the specs, it's essentially one of his sig models, all of which carry his signature on the back of the headstock. Not too sure though. It could actually be John Cruz's signature on the back.
