This topic came to me as I was driving to work and listening to Pink Floyd. There are countless post on who is better between different guitarists (especially SRV vs. Hendrix).

One guitarist I never hear about is David Gilmour. I believe that he has recorded some of the best solos. Obviously “Comfortably Numb” has two great solos in it, but if you haven’t heard “The Final Cut” solo I highly recommend it. It is simple, but ever single not hits home.

What are other people’s thoughts on David Gilmour as a guitarist? I think he is brilliant.

I guess I never see them since I am only on this forum.

I just wanted to hear other people's opinions on David Gilmour guitar playing.

If I remember correctly there have been some discussions on him here too.

My opinion on Gilmour? While he is not one of my favorite guitarists I would have to say that he is someone I would listen to.

To me Gilmour is one of the greats. Not because of his technical skill, but because of his soul and his tone. No one plays a strat more soulfully. His tone is pristine. He can get more emotion out of 5 notes then anyone I've heard.

Give his most recent album "On an Island" a try - you won't be dissapointed. That album is dripping with soul.

I watched a video on tv, a few weeks ago, of Gilmour's band from that tour. He had Crosby and Nash as backup vocals. They also just did an episode of Live From Abbey Road on the Sundance Channel. They did 3 songs, including On an Island, at the Abbey Road studio's.

In case anyone's interested, here's a link to the Abbey Road show:

They are going to show the Gilmour episode tonight at midnight and Tuesday night at 6pm. I have no idea if the times are eastern or not. Like they say, check your local listings.

Now I'm gonna have to order the Sundance Channel. I didn't know there was a Show like that on. (Please, no "Head in the Pooper" jokes).

If you're really into Gilmour check out "Remember That Night." A DVD of last years tour of Europe that ends at Albert Hall. The painful exchange of hellos between Waters and Gilmour will make you cringe (these guys really don't like each other).

Also, check out gilmourish.com. A guitar site dedicated to the sounds of David Gilmour, as well as just plain guitar geeks.

I've always liked David Gilmour, I don't know why I don't mention him more often. See, this is me "Impersonating" him. I hope it doesn't Tick anyone off, I ment it as a Respectful sort of "Joke" for fans of Pink Floyd and Star Trek.

He's one of my favorites to listen to. his phrasing is like a vocal line and his double bended notes are awesome as well.

I couldn't say it better.
"On an Island" is a great CD. And that exchange between Gilmour and Waters was very cold.

Since I am a great believer in the method of "it's not what you play it's what you don't play", I think you would be hard pressed to find many players in David Gilours realm. He does more with one note at a time than many do with a plethora of notes! It's all in the touch and the soul! 8) :!:
