I have recently be working on playing SRV's Lenny, but after a couple days (about 6 hrs.) and starting to get frustrated I just said screw it for now. I went to another song I had never tried before, (Zep's Gallows Pole)
and had it down in about 1 hr. or so. Now looking at Lenny and trying it again I have gotten further along in what seems a faster time.
I guess confusing the brain must stimulate it. Anyone else do this, or find the same results?

If I can't play something, I go away for a while and then one day I can suddenly play it.
They say practise makes perfect, I'm no so sure.

And I thought (and I use the term loosely) I was the only one.

When I was in college studying engineering, I was pushing my seemingly-the-size-of-a-walnut brain to its limits. I recognized that after studying complex material, I understood it better a day or so after studying than I did right afterward. That is a day or so without contemplating the concept or further cracking a book on it. Why is that? It is my personal theory that the brain needs time to digest complex concepts. I really do. That is also the reason why I think it is important to get good rest before tests.

Just my $0.02. Actually, maybe only $0.01 ...

I understand what you mean, I've found this when studying music theory or a tricky part in a song, it fries your brain to begin with, but then at some random time like when you're brushing your teeth or something, it pops into your head, and it makes perfect sense! Ah well :)

Sometimes when I'm trying to learn a hard lick I can play it better if I take a five to ten minute break when I start getting frustrated. When I come back I can play it better than if I had continued trying trying to play for another half an hour. And I can always play a song I learned better the next day. There must be some science to it, but giving your brain a rest is really important to practicing.

It's all about taking a fresh look at things. I remember years ago, I used to play chess and you can just sit there staring at a board for too long. I would get up and walk around a while and then return and the answers to problems would present themselves more readily.
I apply that to all aspects of my life, just leave things for a while and they become more clear. Subconsciously the mind keeps working on the problem perhaps. :D
