Another one o_O You know variety is the spice of life, I guess you feel that if the main dish is good enough than you need no stinking spice :P

I have a black '77 LP Custom and it's a good one I bought new from a guy who worked in the Nashville factory,he got a big discount. The binding has turned yellow and the finish is worn off the hardware and body in places and it looks good.
I've never even looked under the pups,I might after reading this thread.

My "touring guitar" (one-owner '78 LP Standard in tobacco brown SB) is the same way -- the binding is nicely aging and the luster of the finish has dulled from use. If only it weren't so damned heavy!

Boy ain't that the truth!
My son uses it now sometimes in the studio or somewhere relativley safe,I try it out sometimes for a little while and give it back, cause it's heavy!

By contrast my R9 flametop weighs in at 8lbs - 3ozs......a veritable bantam-weight.

No, I think the pickups are original.

It's common for some Gibson owners to remove the pickup covers because it allegedly improves the tone. I'm surmising that's probably what may have occurred with this guitar at some point.

OTOH, it's also possible that the original gold hardware was removed and either replaced or re-plated to restore the gold which wears rather quickly. Gibson puts their gold over nickel, which does not adhere all that well. Fender puts their gold over chrome which is a skosh more impervious to routine handling and playing.

+1 I knew tons of players way back who removed the pup covers. I agree about the gold. It does look pretty fresh.

Well, if the covers had been removed ages ago and only put back on recently in order to sell it, they would look good ...

... and you bought another one?

I'd like to get a 1968 black Les Paul Custom with the chrome hardware (I don't like the gold much because it goes bad too quickly).

I think the gold on mine started wearing off rather quickly, but that was a long time ago.
The black and chrome does look good.
