$2500 is pretty much the norm for a guitar like that when buying from a music store. That being said, excellent decision and beautiful guitar, saving money and not sacrificing looks, quality, or tone ^^

Thanks! Now, Im feelng much better with the purchased. I was beginning to think I paid too much, specially for a Norlin era LP Custom. Its sounds and plays great.

There was a guy on that forum talking about my gear? That's wild because I've only looked in on it and never signed in,I didn't think that my little collection was that noteworthy and my only Les Paul is my Epi G400 Custom-very interesting and puzzling.

Nice Les Paul Custom. Aren't there dates on the pots?

The problem with Gibson serial numbers (pre-mid-70s at any rate) is that they keep reusing the sequence 1 to 999999.

My late-1974 Gold Top has a 500000 number.

WELL FOLKS, you are not going to believe this as I scored a second LP Custom!!! I was over at Norms Rare Guitars today and they had on old new stock 2006 Les Paul Custom that was in the back room for years. I guess they finally found it after all these years and I got for $2550 out the door with original custom shop hardcase. The guitar is brand new and was priced as clearance or used for $2595. Thanks Mark and Jordan from Norms Rare Guitar! I have a bad case of G.A.S indeed.

So which one is better? 8)

Well, I can't really say as both have different tone. The early 70s seem a little warmer and the pickups not as loud or hotter than the newer 2006. The early 70s is much heavier weighting at 11.5 lbs while the 2006 is at 9.8 lbs.

The pots have so much corrosion, any codes are virtually gone/hidden. I called Gibson and the they say it is most likely a 72.

The lead guitarist who used to play in my Dad's band has an early 70s Les Paul Custom which he's been playing since he got it new in the early 70s. Cost him $700. It's black just like that. But the gold hardware on his has corroded more than it has on yours, especially on the pickup covers.

Anyway, congrats on the new guitars. :D Looks like you have twins!

Yes, twins in tuxedo outfits :D Both sound very different from each other. I wonder how many guitarist have owned my early 70s before me and how many gigs and the many places she has played in in the last 40 years. Man the many stories behind every dings, scratches and road worn on her makes you to wonder.

I have a black '77 LP Custom and it's a good one I bought new from a guy who worked in the Nashville factory,he got a big discount. The binding has turned yellow and the finish is worn off the hardware and body in places and it looks good.
I've never even looked under the pups,I might after reading this thread.

My "touring guitar" (one-owner '78 LP Standard in tobacco brown SB) is the same way -- the binding is nicely aging and the luster of the finish has dulled from use. If only it weren't so damned heavy!
