Wow! what a touchy subject, but since you asked, I'll be 100% honest and give you my personal opinion on this. I do believe in a higher power but not in any kind of organized Religion where you are told how to live your life. To me, that's mind control and is wrong. The Catholic Church is a prime example of this. They preach that if you don't obey their preachings, you will suffer eternal dammnation, but yet their priests go around molesting children and get away with it. It's nothing more than a political state which IMO, should have it's tax exempt status taken away from it. Do and then we'll see how much they can get away with.

First off organized religions do not tell you how to live your lives. Second I when I was younger I went to sunday school and was educated about Catholicism. If you don't believe in what we believe in you don't suffer eternal damnation. The pastor at our church would visit our class every now and then and we would ask questions. One question that was always asked was "if a person is not catholic can they go to heaven". And his answer was always if they lived a good life then they would. Third very few priests go around molesting kids and if they do they are considered sinners.

It intrigues me that people feel the need to vocalize their belief, while those that dont believe feel no need to vocalize the fact that they dont. It seems many people that practice organized religion feel the need to vocally reaffirm their beliefs in public, while a much fewer amount, that don't believe, don't feel the need to go around telling everyone they're a non-believer.

Religion by its very nature is an extremely personal relationship between someone and their god.... why do you want to make something so personal so public for everyone to see ?

It intrigues me that people who dont believe feel the need to attack people who do believe

I don't know why any religeon wants to be included in any part of secular life.
Their meant to be Holy, set aside for God. Not housed in the middle of mammon. Like some wrung out punishment that people are made to endure.

It was Leo who created the Strat not God :)

I really hope no one here judges the other for choosing whether to believe or not, or changes their mind based on what is found in this thread :)

I have freed myself from any religious beliefs and I have never been happier. I do not judge nor disrespect anyone who believes, it is your choice, and I never claimed to know it all. If I am a sinner for not believing but have done nothing but good in my life and the Almighty would rather throw me in hell then I want no part in that.

I believe in gravity. And I believe in karma. I believe in a lot of things for one reason or another. God?? Umm, don't want to offend but, not so much.

Now I see this whole topic has been handled in a reasonable and intellectual manner showing the quality of the forum members. No real flame throwers been used. Feelings hurt requiring reprisal.

I believe in the ways of the force. This has been bestowed upon me while I was training to be a Jedi Knight by my master, Obiwan Kenobi. He taught me the ways of the force and to use it wisely. He always got irritated whenever I questioned his teachings.. Master Yoda allways thought something was up.

Lately things have taken a bit of a downer, I must admit and this may come as a shock to you all- ...I have been thinking that maybe there are other ways to the force and I have been looking into the teachings of the sith.

Apparently, you can manipulate someones lifespan and keep them from dieing. I don't want my wife to die, but the price I have to pay is to join Darth Sideous to rule the galaxy in order to achieve this. He said that the Galactic Alliance is corrupt, and he would build me a death star.. what a bloke!

Oh my!! seems a bit of a tiff I have got myself into all of the sudden the rebellion is after me now..

Yeah, but believing in a higher force or some sort of intelligent design isn't really like believing in God...

Yes, and I am a scientist.

It's amazing what we don't know and people say "we've proven it!" First, off, science proves nothing. We accept or reject the hypothesis through p values and statistics. We know nothing. On the other hand, religeon is about faith. A person's faith is the cornerstone of their religeon. I think it juvenile when someone that doesn't believe what I believe has to make me a nonbeliever or believer of another religeon by giving me what if scenarios and asks me "how do you know?" I don't have to have all of the answers. I just have to have faith.

It's amazing just how little we know about the world, space, the universe yet we hypothisize and tell everyone that we have proven something when in fact we just accepted the null.....people seem to have faith in these scientists' views and research. To each his/her own.

another point id like to make... Catholicism teaches two contradictory views... one of a loving, caring, forgiving God, and the other an angry, wrathful, punishing God. also, when you take the time to really look into Catholicism, youll realize that theres no way you cant sin... yet another reason why i choose to stay away from organized religion.

Also, to the scientist guy:
I can only hope youre not saying youre one of those "the world is only 4000 years old" fools.... those people worry me...

Joe

Why are we paying millions for some bloke to come over here from Italy. I can get a return ticket to Bergamo for £36.
Thats some belief that his God will look after him aint it. He thinks so little of his Saviours power to protect him, he takes out multimillion pound security measures, that we pay for. Despite the Vatican being absolutely minted.

Seems to me we've better things to waste money on. Can't our goverment find a few banks to bail out?

I detest the notion of a higher power and that I am not in control of myself, it's offensive to me, the very idea.
