Hey guys, haven't been posting much lately. Been really busy, hope all you guys are doing well!

Anyway, to my question:

We have a show coming up on the 26th and have had VERY bad luck with bass players. In most rehearsals we just play with 2 guitars and drums and turn the bass up on the rhtythm guitar's amp. It sounds great.

My friend James said he would fill in for bass for the show as a temp replacement but the trouble is we don't have enough rehearsal time to get him as up to speed as I would like him to be.

So here we go, opinions please: Do we play a small club show minus a bass player because it has been sounding good or do we risk using James in a line-up without being completely up to speed?

What would you do?

Thanks so much,

CC

Oooh tough call!

Trouble is if you get your mate to fill in and he sucks how are you gonna go breaking it to him?

If you sound good with two guitars and no bass, go for it I reckon. If possible maybe get the rhythm guitar to run into 2 amps for even more "depth". Sometimes when I jam with a buddy one of us runs a strat or tele into his 1x15 bass amp and it gives us a bit more bottom end.

Just an idea. Don't know how feasible it'd be in a real-world situation.

Cheers.

That sounds like a good idea of running a guitar through 2 amps to compensate. You may be on to something there! Thank you, I appreciate it mate.

Does anybody own an octave pedal for guitar by any chance? There's nothing tighter.

Forget about James for now(no offense, guy).

If he's got the groove, but plays the wrong notes every now and then, I'd keep him in. Just turn the treble and mid way down on his amp.

If he's got the right notes but keeps losing the timing etc, i'd go without him.

It's usually ok if the bass is out of tune, that's what I'm getting at. As long as that low end thump & punch hits the audience at all the right spots... You won't get that with only guitars! ;-)

good luck!

If I were in a band with two guitarists. I'd rather play bass myself and let the other bloke do lead, than have no bass.
I'm no bassist, but even my root note neanderthal thunderings are better than no bass.

That or pull the gig.

Play the Gig using the Bass Player, or one of the guitarists should be playing backup laying down a chordal structure.

Either way, you need *something* underneath that lead other than a drumset.

If you are not confident that James can keep the groove in time even on the simple bass lines probably is good idea not to include him in that particular gig, but bring him to rehearsals if he is reliable person.

Can one of you two guitar guys play bass to somewhat your satisfactory level? If yes, the "least expensive" solution is to play some songs from your set with two el. guitars where you must have two guitars and the rest one guitar and the bass.

Hope that helps.

You gotta have the Bass. Just keep it simple for him to start.

Cheers guys.

James is good but like I said, its a time constraint now that has me stressed and its one of those shows where most good bands from here will be in the audience doing their 'judging' thing.

Just out of interest, and not that I'm a fan, but how did The White Stripes do it live with just guitar and drums? What kind of set up did that guy have?

@Niki, theres no way we can pull out now bro. It would burn a lot of bridges favour-wise and the flyers are all over the city and its doing its rounds on facebook. Plus we need it.

Thanks!

Thats what I'm leaning towards Bill. I'm just worried on that side of things that what sounds great in the rehearsal studio wont translate well to a club.

Its pickling my brain.
