Well I use a Line 6 UX2 which has modelling software with it. People usually ask me how I get such a good tone and sound from my guitar for recordings, and the truth is its the software that comes with the UX2. A lot of people say they can't get a sound that good.
The Recording software I use is Ableton however for basic recording pretty much anything will do if you want to make simple recordings and not make grand sound scapes with lots of audio and midi tracks.
