I've used POD farm on a lap top for over a year.

I bought a line6 interface, GX, about $150, it is the interface to plug your quitar into, then plug the interface into the laptop.

POD Farm is what they call the amp modelling software, simulates about 30 different amps, 50 pedals, 20 cabinets, just pick what you want to sound like from the options on the software.

It comes with free recording software. It includes some drum / bass samples. Just pick the time / rhythm and start recording.

Inexpensive if you already have a lap top.

i just want to record myself and use cd's as backing tracks or maybe even design backing tracks with the software, then record myself over top of them. i didnt think that the pod farm would work for that.
taking all opinions and suggestion still guyus. this has been a big help to me. ive learned a good bit today about this stuff.

Seems you and I are in similar canoes, I'm also looking for PC music recording gear. Came across this today, looks interesting.

Cheers,

looks olbut i just dont trust behringer products. they are a lot like digitech
garbage. if i were to go this route i would do the pod farm thing, which still might. i wonder how hard it would be to use the pod farm and some better quality recording program at the same time?
like use the pod farm for you guitar and effects to record with on another program?

Hey Way Cool Jr.
Just a few thoughts for ya.
I am not a recording genius, but
I have a little experience with
recording, editing, mixing, etc.
I would give some thought to
the poster that suggested Audacity (free)
and the 79.00 interface.
That way you could get your feet wet and
not be out much $$.
Other things to check out..........
Line 6 Pod studio UX2 with Pod farm.
Presonus audiobox usb.
Cakewalk UA 25ex...
Just a few.
Go to the manufacturers web site for the
interface you are interested in and check out
the required computer and operating system specs.
Very important that you meet or exceed the required
specs.
Just jump in the shallow end $$and work your way to
the deep end $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Most of all......HAVE FUN !!
Rock on.
"Bud"
EDIT....Sorry about the short lines....I will do better next time.

Hi Way Cool Jr!

Audacity is a good way to start, a USB interface is essential, and a microphone if you want to record acoustic sources. Check with your favourite music gear dealer.
Software-wise there are various options. Usually there are free LE versions that come with the interfaces nowadays, like Cubase or Ableteon Live which I suggest you simply try out. You will have certain software that will and some that won't run on your system (that is a rule I find), so don't sweat if the laptop doesn't do what it should do at first.

Also, I recommend a different forum for this type of stuff. I mean there's surely many of us who are knowledgeable enough to help you out but I find gearslutz is a pretty interesting place to get info. Check out the "low end theory" section and the "music PC" sections first, that should get you up to speed.

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/

Also you might want to check your Operating System, there are millions of different configs with Windows so there are bound to be issues with compatibility regarding soft- and hardware. This may mean you need to downgrade to XP Service Pack 2 etc., it really is a never ending story with a Windows-PC.
Also you might want to get the free Asio4all-driver if you happen to have audio dropouts and / or latency issues you can't resolve with your sequencer software or the driver that comes with the interface. You can download it here:

http://www.asio4all.com/

Good luck, don't let the work scare you, it might all be fine and indeed "Plug and Play" (at least that's what I keep my fingers crossed for!), and bring us some samples when you're ready!

All the best

-Nutter

I 2nd Mikes suggestion for Audacity. It's decent free software that you can easily use.
I'm far too thick for home recording. I just record ideas onto my Zoom H2 and then play around with em on Audacity. That gets em onto the PC where their safe and sound.
If Mike says the Tascam interface is decent then believe him. His home recordings are great. He posts links to em from time to time, their well worth watching out for.
The last 3 tracks I had recorded (at a bloody expensive studio), I was really unhappy with the mastering of. I didn't even send Mike the instrument takes, just the mastered recordings. He improved em. He's good at that stuff.

oh i trust his word, im just looking for options.
this way i can have 3 or 4 products i can research into.
theres so many out there ya know, no time to look into all of them.
i did read reviews on adacity. there were a few common complaints of glitches and not a real way to fix them through a support number.
