where can i go to learn more? im talking very begining newbie type stuff?
how do ya get your guitars pluged in? how do i use my shure 57's?
where do i go to learn more guys? i'll question ya to death if i try it here.
i need very user friendly software guys or i'll lose interest and go back to my 4track recorders.

Do you have a Mac or a PC? If you have a Mac I know of some really cool options, if you have a PC... Not so much. You'd have to ask someone else. What's your budget?

I am a Mac user for this stuff but what I found out from PC users is that is quite dooable.

PC laptop will be a bit limited unless you have one of those $1000 + gaming laptops with monster sound card. You can try to purchase USB 2.0 or FireWire audio interface that are bundled with the recording software.

Audio interface typically (USB for under $200) now days comes with two channel interface and this means you can plugin mic and guitar and record your self at the same time. You can also use one channel and record and layer them in the software one by one.

As far as software is concerned I don't have any good recommendations for the PC.

Go to the store with the good return/exchange policy and give it a try. You might experience latency issues if our sound interface in your laptop is not at par for data transfer.

Hi again WCJ

Well it is hard to define a "big" difference between the two "flavors" (I call them flavors because they both run now on Intel platform) of computing equipment. Typically MACs are by default well equipped and optimized for graphics and sound processing.

Heck, at one point, when I was learning this stuff my garden variety iMAc let me connect my strat directly to the line input with the guitar chord jack conversion 1/4 to 1/8 and a stomp box(es) to amplify the guitar signal. That was fine but had some noise issues when running effects in front of it.

That is not to say that PCs are not capable of the same, however PCs come in huge of variety and it is hard to figure out without some specifics of your laptop.

I had a Tascam two channel USB unit that was garbage and self destructed two days after the warranty expired. Currently I am running PreSonus USB two channel which is much better and with no latency and noise issues. Works very well with mac and not so well, I heard on PC (some kind of software glitch).

Hope that helps

guitar, mic, cables, software, computer, digital interface

any on line retailer of musical instruments or computer retailer will have digital interfaces

good luck.

The interface converts your analog signal to digital.

Audacity - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pes-6njWp4U&feature=fvw

Good way to start/try it.
