Who made me decide to pick up the Guitar ?

Thats a long answer for sure.... To start, I guess the main purpose is what Artist inspired me to want to play. Well, in my case, thats SRV. I've been a fan of his music ever since my father introduced me to it when I was very young.

I've been addicted to Waters, Hendrix, Clapton, King, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Robert Johnson, and more.

Goes deeper than just one Artist though... One of the GIANT things that made me pic up guitar is this little guy :

My Yamaha 82-Z Custom. Been playing Sax since I was 5. Finished my Degree in Music. Met an extraordinary group of musicians along the way. I've had the pleasure of playing with Dave Brubeck, Rich Goldstein, Steve Davis, Gary Keller, and a ton of modern-day Jazz Artists that have made a major name for themselves. All of them tell the same story : "Play a Chorded Instrument, even if you play it badly."

So the logical choice was to start learning Guitar. Its been a secret longing of mine forever to be able to play, so I guess the ability to finally afford another instrument is what sent me over the edge.

That's funny, because I took up (tenor) sax recently in part to help me learn more about lead guitar.

Thats how it goes man!

We Lead players study you chord guys to practice harmonic structure, you chord guys study us lead players to learn how to play a melody :)

Well it was my friends older sister for me......clichéd boyhood crush. She stayed next door (does this get any more clichéd?). She would play guitar with her window open and I would hear it in the evenings. I just thought it sounded amazing and it inspired me to start learning. That was seven years ago and I still enjoy playing as much as I enjoyed listening back then. Absolutely nothing beats the feeling of playing in front of people - one of lifes greatest joys. I now play with my window open in hope of inspiring the neighbours or passers by :-)

That's a tough one. I remember after watching Neil Schon rip through "Stone in Love" i felt like i needed to be that cool. I would also say that the Eric Johnson Album "ah via musicom" I was a real influence to my starting to play. But what really hooked me was the first time i heard the "Flying in a Blue Dream" album (Joe Satriani)! I'd never heard anything that sweet and eventually bought way too many satch albums. Ha... I can't really play much satriani but I haven't been able to put my guitar down since.
Haha, Kind of a wierd combination of influences.

1. Joe Walsh. "Life's Been Good"

I don't really play like him at all--although in the past my band has done a decent version of "Rocky Mountain Way" with the bassist singing it (I did the slide and talkbox parts).

But just the dicotomy of four of five interwoven guitar parts on "Life's Been Good" (the rhythm line, the acoustic riffs, the killer stop-time "hook" riff, the talk-box infected break, and the smooth lead part) made me realize that guitar, in itself, can basically orchestrate most of a song.

2. Keith Richards. "Jumpin' Jack Flash"

I do play a bit like him, especially with the open G tunings, but that riff alone set a fire inside me that I had to either feed or smother, and I chose to feed it.

Ironically, both of these songs were really old by the time I started playing (1989)

I was drawn to guitar when I was very young but, because of interference, didn't actually start until I was 20. (Very frustrated about that turn of events but anyway...)

My reason was that I wanted to be in control of the music I played and to make original music. As far as influence goes I have to credit The Church. Without their inspiration I would have been satisfied as a drummer.

Bass in my case. Jack Bruce of Cream. A real wake up.

Keith Richards.

When all my friends were listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and the rest of the grunge movement, I instead became drawn to the Rolling Stones. I started collecting everything I could get my hands on, even Keith's solo albums - and I loved it all (even their 80's albums). I would watch the Live at the Max VHS over and over - Keith's solo in "Happy" in that concert was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen.

Well, here I am, now with a small collection of Telecasters, and an odd rhythm style from studying every move that Keith made!

Very cool, Powdered Toast Man! I agree with all of your followings of Keith. He is the man of invention regarding somewhat odd guitar playing style. But man, I could only aspire to try and play any Stones stuff. Though my wife is a big fan and it would probably thrill her if I could rock some Jumping Jack Flash or Start Me Up!
