need advice from those who sing. my bandmates tell me i'm the best singer in the band yet i only sing one tune. over the weekend we played 2 gigs in 1 day and the singers voice was trashed. i could have stepped up and done the right thing but i didn't because of lack of confidence. since then, i have told the dudes i would try and sing more. now, i'm very nervous because i know they will hold me to it.
also, just like guitar playing, some days i got it. some days i don't. what's up with that?

We all have our on and off days be it for singing or playing it's just the way it goes.No need to feel nervous or lack confidence in your singing,if the guys say your good take their word for it.I doubt that the other members would say that unless it was true because the vocals are such an important part of the groups sound. Now get out there and exercise those pipes.

Always warm up. Try playing different scales on your guitar and sing along with the notes you're playing. I know this is an obvious one, but be sure to choose songs that are within your range. Don't push so hard that you damage your vocal cords. Most of all, have fun with it! :D

On days when you need to sing, try to talk a LOT less and do not shout or raise your voice at all. And yes, warm up.

Go to as many jams and open mic nights as you can, eventually you will gain confidence from singing in front of people.

Hello jeebus!

If your band mates are all for it (especially the current lead singer!) then I'd take the plunge. You will get much out of it, also as a songwriter. Much more satisfactory doin' yer own stuff!

Take two or three singing lessons from a vocal coach or other professional teacher. He'll start you off on the right foot and you can take it from there. He'll be able to show you some essential breathing thechniques and help you define your tonal range etc., so you know what you can sing on a regular basis.

Also if you're worried about continuity of your performances, arrange the songs on 80 % of your tonal hight capacity, then, if you're on a bad day, you've always got a safety buffer. On a good day, you've got some headroom! ;-)

good luck mate!
