I found out just yesterday from an interview with Robbie Krieger of the Doors who the G. Puglese was that played such great blues harp on Roadhouse Blues,it was none other than John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful. That's not surprising since John's father was one of the few classical harmonica players in the world. The elder Sebastian has appeared with many of the world's best symphony orchestras. Also I hadn't noticed that guitar great Lonnie Mack played bass on that track and some others. To those who are too young to have known him Lonnie Mack was a mostly instrumental guitarist who did a knockout version of Memphis on his trademark origial '58 Flying V.Many of Lonnie's riffs have found their way into regular use by guitar players of today whether they know it or not.

Very cool! Embarrassingly, I always just assumed that it was Jim on harmonica.

I have read in the past that it was Lonnie Mack playing guitar (not bass) on that track; hence, Jim yelling, "Do it, Lonnie, do it!!" as the guitar solo starts...

John Sebastian didn't just play with 'em on Roadhouse Blues, he also acted as a guest on a couple of The Doors' shows. I'm sure you've heard Jim introduce him to the crowd on the live album Alive She Cried, before they play Little Red Rooster together. Sebastian also did several songs together with The Doors on Live in Detroit.
The reason why many can't believe at first that it is Sebastian playing Roadhouse Blues, is that he used the pseudonym G. Pugliese to avoid problems with his record label.
Talking about Jim and the harmonica, you've probably heard Jim's attempt at sounding like he's playing one at the end of Cars Hiss By My Window.

The interview I'm talking about with Robbie Krieger is in the latest issue of Guitar World(Oct.) and Robbie says that during the recording of Morrison Hotel he referred to Lonnie as the bass player and Lonnie's reply was"I'm not a bass player,I'm a geetar player."Robbie does confirm though that Lonnie played bass on Roadhouse Blues and Maggie M'Gill.

Lonnie was one of the 1st & (I think) best of 'Blue Eyed Soul'. Give a listen to the vocals on these two cuts; STOP and WHY.

There's always something intriguing in the mystic that comes with a first poster blasting out a detailed and well-appreciated fact, limited to a specific matter.
Thank you, bdh136! (And welcome to the forum!)
