Applause does not feed the bulldog.

Hard to describe, really.

A lot of UK audiences are stoic fickle things, theres no other audience like em. I've seen fantastic bands more or less boo'ed off stage. Audiences everywhere with possibly the exception of Belgium seem to be more appreciative.
At the end of the day, same as every other gig, you gotta play it by ear.

Like everyone else, even the Joe Cool's who say it doesn't matter, I like it and it does matter. I play to my best (for what thats worth) whenever I play live. The money is essential, not important. Word soon gets round about venues that jib out on band fee's. Sooner or later they end up with no live acts.

Bassist at church, 206 Masses and services, to date.

Applause...maybe twice a year, for major works at Christmas (usually midnight Mass) and Easter (sunrise service).

Otherwise, never any applause. No $$$ either. Gotta write them acheque before leaving. That's okay, too.

It's a necessary evil, at least some form of crowd appreciation is necessary. If you aren't getting it . . . basically you suck, either at playing or at songwriting.

Get your applause or get back in the woodshed.
Yeah it's pretty important.
