Hehe - yes, I'd noticed your feelings about Zep before...

BTW: I may have been at the barbers, and that may have been about 1.00 in the afternoon where I am. None of that necessarily means I've been out of bed very long though... 8)

Songlines, I also have Hittin the Note, I prefer Songlines.

If you want to sample songs before buying try itunes, or maybe there are other online sites as well to sample songs.

Their version of "Woman Across the river" on Hittin' the note, is smokin'!! Love that version!

Just looking at Derek Trucks on wikipeida and noticed he is on Clapton's new ablum, Sept '10. Looks like Mr. Clapton will be getting even more of my hard earned cash.

The most amazing thing about Duane's solo in Dreams is that he starts out playing lead and mid way switches to slide in standard tuning,he did that live onstage.People can do it but he did it effortlessly, not missing a lick or messing up the mood of the solo.
On stage later on he would tune to open E and use a Gibson SG mostly...but still played the solo in Dreams in standard tuning on a Les Paul to swap back and forth between slide and regular lead.
The guy could do most anything on a guitar, when he was a teenager playing at the Briar Patch club in Nashville,he caught the attention of Chet Adkin's daughter, who took Chet to see him,he said later that he "loved that Allman kid,he had the best coordination between his right and left hands".
And really,he was just a month shy of his 25th birthday when he was killed, but nobody who ever met him thought of him in any other way than the spiritual leader of the Allman brotherhood.

Pretty good list over there if you're looking to expand your horizons even further, funny, they all seem to play gibsons over there.

Does JJ Cale belong on that list? Because his music is of a different genre, not because the quality of his songs or ability don't belong on that list.

if you like the Allman Brothers and slide guitar try out some Derick Trucks.

He does a instrumental where the tone is other worldly.

hes next on my list to get. i like derek. hes into it for all the right reasons.
i think he will help keep slide alive for a long time to come.
which disk do you suggest?

I would suggest starting 'Already Free' and working backwards.

lately that disc, and some assorted Joe Bonamassa stuff have been fighting for dominance in my iPod.

seeing ABB live was amazing. I am too young to have seen the Duane era, but every incarnation of that band has been stellar.

One other oft-times member to check out would be Warren Haynes, wither solo or with the amazing 'Gov't Mule'

so my suggestions for discs you need to go out and buy are:

ABB- live at the filmore (that and eat a peach are such killer live material.)

Joe Bonamassa : Live at the Royal Albert Hall, Live from Nowhere in Particular.--(I would say I prefer live at the royal albert, BUT i like the versions of every song they have in common BETTER on the Nowhere album, plus it has a few killer tracks just on it's own -no one does better covers than Joe.)

Gov't Mule: 'The Depest End' or get the DVD if you can.

Everything I listed is live material(except the derek trucks disc.). Very few bands can get it down live like these bands.

If you are digging ABB I would recommend checking out:

CDB (Charlie Daniels Band) - Fire on the Mountain album. New York City, King Size Rosewood Bed and No Place to Go are unbelievable tracks.

This is one of the finest passages the ABB ever recorded; and I'll bet almost none of you have listened to it more than the first (and probably only) time that you listened to Mountain Jam all of the way through. Here's what you do:

1) Put the "Eat A Peach" CD in the player.
2) Cue up Track 4. Mountain Jam.
3) Fast Forward (or even better listen from the start) to 26:50.
4) Listen thru to at least 30:10.
5) Beer optional.

You're welcome.

Hi WTS: in the nicest, friendliest possible way, you are so wrong about that! :D

You're amongst the sort of people here who listen to Mountain Jam through (not skipping the drum duet) savouring every note and change of beat and dynamics; get to the end and put it straight on again. And again.

I'm almost ashamed to think how many times I've listened to Mountain Jam - and every other Allman track - in my life. In fact, I don't think I could admit the truth about that any place... except here! 8)

Now, about that beer...

Cheers - C

I have listened hundreds of times to every track of the original ABB I have gotten my hands on since 1969. 8) there's not a note on any of them that I've missed.
I saw Duane only once in Nashville, and it was a memorable experience,I was about 16 /17 years old and too young to be in the club legally, but there I was.
I've followed the ABB throughout the years and have seen every incarnation of the band, and have met all of them casually at times, but the central figure in all of it has been Duane Allman, for without his vision we would have been deprived of some of the most innovative, improvisational music ever recorded,or given away for free.
The orginal Brothers loved to play so much that they would set up in city parks on Sundays to play for whoever showed up.
Piedmont park in Atlanta was home to several of those jams...for free.
Talking about the best album being Fillmore, drummer Butch Trucks has said many times that the very best gig they did in his opinion was not recorded, and it was the night before closing night there. He says that one show has always stood out in his mind as the epitome of the original band's performances.

You might be interested in these CD's from the ABB web site. I have the SUNY disc, and the quality is marginal to excellent. However, if you are a big ABB fan, this has one of the only live recorded versions of Blue Sky (I believe that there may only be 3 bootlegs). You can hear them working out the structure that eventually would wind up in one take on the record. The ABB went in the studio just after this SUNY performance and put Blue Sky for the ages on Eat a Peach, September 1971. Duane Allman was dead October 29, 1971. Blue Sky is my favorite song of all time.
