arjay,
what about mahogany rush? did you like these guys?
i never hear folks mention them. ive heard a few things by them but.....

I think I was overseas when Mahogany Rush was around. And AFRTS only played Top 40 stuff in Vietnam, Republic of. We did get to watch "Bonanza" and "Leave It To Beaver" dubbed into Vietnamese though.

why do you need approval from people on the internet? your guarenteed to find a bunch of people who love it and a bunch of people who hate it.

Someone recommended it, and you bought it. just listen to it and dont make a big deal out of it! if you like it then YAY! If you dont then so what.

Great Scott - who told you that? Listen: you're American, you love guns: go shoot that person - he's no use to you or the world.

(This is a joke, ladies and gentlemen. I am not in fact inciting murder over the internet. Don't do it.)

But seriously. There is a live album released in the '90s called The Allman Brothers Live at Ludlow Garage that is from a show they did in the very, very early days. It is true that back at that point they were not quite as super-tight as they were to be a year or two later - though they were already at that stage better than most live acts ever get.

Live at Filmore East and the live sections of Eat A Peach from the same shows are simply THE BEST live recordings in the history of rock. You didn't know them before? Good Lord, man: have you lived your life with your head in a bucket?

If in some strange universe I had to choose just one track to listen to for the rest of my life it would be In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed from the Filmore album. A nice track, Dickie Betts soloing at his best during first half, a little interlude with Gregg on keys... and then Duane comes in and takes it to seventh heaven in the second half. This is the equivalent of the Beethoven Violin Concerto for electric guitar. Simply as good as it gets. Not the fastest, not the most technically accomplished, not the most difficult - just the most musical and beautiful thing anyone has ever done with a guitar and amp.

If you don't like it that's fine - but it's your problem, not theirs! :D

As you can see, I'm sitting on the fence on this stuff...

Cheers - C

yea i had heard a few things from them but never really was into
this kind of music. i WAS mostly into metal type stuff.
just didnt really care for the classic rock n roll thing. i really started changing things this yr. i put away all of my old same ole same ole, and branched out to find new to me type stuff.
i would hear them on the radio but thats as far as it went.
you know how the radio is, they find 5 songs from a group and wear the living hell out of them for decades unless the group does something new.

Not at all. Im simply pointing out that you seem to need validation from folks on this forum.

Just relax, listen to a bunch of music and see what you like. Youtube is great for this.

Look up allman bros, look at the most watched/highest ranked vids. look at related vids. youl end up liking some, hating others but you will find a lot fo good stuff.

you did after all say that if people here told you it was rubbish, you wouldnt open the cd. You will miss a lot of good stuff by not listning to a piece of music, simply because some guys on the web said its rubbish.

Im not getting heavy on you at all, just a bit of friendly advice.

if you like the Allman Brothers and slide guitar try out some Derick Trucks.

He does a instrumental where the tone is other worldly.

just trying to get down to the real allman brothers music.
i have a whole load of crap ive bought and didnt like it.
what i ment by not opening it was like i had mentioned. i had heard that the first few cds werent very good. so i figured i would ask the group their opinion. if the disk i got wasnt very high on the list of must have's from the allman bros, i was gonna take it back and get one of their better disks.
so basicly i was asking if this is a good disk by them or could i have made a better choice? why waste the cash if its not one of their better disks?

Duane Allman is my hero, always has been always will be....I named one of my sons after him.
The first albums were great, whoever said they were not hot then, didn't understand the music....just like I saw Charlie Daniels one time not long ago in an interview say that he always thought of the ABB as a great blues band...,I respect Charlie's opinion, but they were SO much more.
The first album is good and basic,it was the songs in their basic form that they jammed with on stage...and that was their true element, the stage.
ABB @ Fillmore is the best soundwise because of the way it was recorded with Tommy Dowd's guidance.
There's a lot of live stuff with Duane that fans trade, but most of it is audience recorded and sound quality suffers....on the "Hittin' the Note" website you can order some live shows that are of decent quality.
They were a true "fusion" band in the sense of mixing R&B,jazz, blues,Western Swing (the twin leads),R&R,horn lines and anything else they could put into their music.
The original Allman's music has to be listened to,studied, and embraced to fully appreciate, and if you do come to love it,you will forever.

Songlines, I also have Hittin the Note, I prefer Songlines.

If you want to sample songs before buying try itunes, or maybe there are other online sites as well to sample songs.

Ha - I do indeed know! Was just sitting in the barber's shop a few minutes ago and the radio was on in the background: Hotel California; Layla; Back in Black; Smoke On The Water; and finally just as I was leaving... Stairway.

All noble stuff, to be sure. But...

Anyhow. Just to take things further, though The Allmans on disc is really all about the live playing, there is a number called Dreams from the first studio album which I think is totally gorgeous. Again, nothing very difficult - even I can play along with this note for note if needs be. It's just the musicality and soul of Duane's playing that takes it somewhere else.

...Ah, here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwxsF9FCE0Q

Trippy, man! 8)

(BTW: I take it you get that my mock outrage in my previous post was all in friendly good humour? Really I want to welcome any and all newcomers to the Allman Brothers Band with a big happy grin...)

Hi inbalance99: I totally agree. Amazing that Derek never met Duane because he sure is the heir in technique and more importantly feel when it comes to slide.

Frustrating thing is I don't find enough of his band's tracks where I actually like the music a lot. Don't hate it either; but they're kinda "meh" to me as numbers.

Slide playing to die for though. Guitarist magazine put him on their cover last year with the caption; "Is this the best guitar player in the world?" Not the way I think about things - but I still, I can't think of anyone I'd place much higher.

Sublime.

Cheers - C
