A nice 60's style fender jazz in candy apple red with matching headstock, block inlays and neck binding. Stacked vol/tone vol/tone controls and pre CBS style vintage PUs.

I say, yum yum. :P

[edit woops I missed the non bit haha.

In that case good ol bog standard Jazz for me, yup! Versatile, simple and downright cool 8)

To me, the Eric Johnson strat is the finest production model solid body guitar ever made.

I'd say a 1950 esquire would be the 'ultimate' Fender considering that it was basically the jumpstart that was needed for solid-body electric guitars. Even though they had problems with the neck bending (they had no truss rod), that to me is still the 'ultimate' fender. As far as something newer and a little more practical, I think the current American Standard Strats and Teles are the ultimate Fenders. They are very high quality instruments, and much more affordable than guitars of the same build quality from other companies who shall remain nameless.

The pre-CBS L series Strats were the best of the Strats as far as I'm concerned. The L series had the best feeling necks and the best sounding pickups.Granted you could come across the odd dog but when you got one of the majority of good ones they were tremendous instruments.

I love the look of the Merle Haggard Telecaster but I think I'd opt to lose the Merle signature and the Tuff Dog logo.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
