Hi, I'm in the market for a new guitar (right now I have a piece of crap peavey), and I've narrowed my decision down to a Mustang or a Jaguar. Normally I would just stop by Guitar Center and see if they have either of the two to try 'em out, but being left handed, I'm really limited to the 3 Squier strats or Epi Les Pauls they have in the store.

With that said, I'm stuck ordering online, or waiting and praying for Music Go Round to get one.

I probably won't be messing around with any of the stock electronics because I don't know the first thing about it, so whatever the guitar comes with, I'm sticking to that.

The type of music I play is a lot of punk rock (The Clash is my favorite band), alternative rock (generally '90s grunge/alt like Smashing Pumpkins or Soundgarden), classic rock, and just some obscure genres.

Anyways, sorry for the long post, it's my first day signed up on the website. Thanks in advance to anyone that's willing to give their 2 cents.

Hi Greenghoul, and welcome to the forums

Ya know what you could do.... Go to the GC and have the "clerk" play them both for you (provides they have them) even though they are right handed you could hold them upside down... for the feeling of the neck... I just kind of think its important for you to hear them before buying

Just my opinion YMMV

Bill

I don't think I"ve ever seen either of these re-issues as south-paws, and damn few originals as lefties either for that matter.

Best of luck though.

As Arjay said it's very unlikely that the reissues are available in lefty. There weren't many original Mustangs or Jags made either.Jimi Hendrix played both a right handed Jaguar and Mustang strung left that could be an option if you were stuck but heartset on getting one.The upper fret access could be compromised a bit but you can adapt.I'm a righty but I have a lefty Strat strung right for Hendrix stuff and I adapted to it after a while.

There are two new left hand mustangs on e-bay, there both the 1969 Japanese reissues.

There both 1025.00 + 120.00 shipping from Japan.

Q: If your a big Clash fan, why not go for a Telecaster?

You can get a new one for far less then a Mustang.

Heres a new sunburst Telecaster for 499.00 with free shipping.

I've looked into Telecasters a bit, but when I tried one, it just didn't feel "right".

I might just shop around for another guitar, the main reason I want either a Mustang or a Jaguar is because I've seen videos and I love the sound they give. And I don't want to be the average joe with a strat, I like going against the grain in a sense.

It's not urgent that I get a new guitar right this minute, maybe I'll wait a few months and one of them will show up at a music go round or a pawn shop in the area.

I think the Jaguar is the nicer of the 2 guitars.

Yeah, I also think the Jaguar is the nicer looking of the two, but I still want to get a feel for the necks before I order.

On a side note: I was browsing craigslist and saw a MIM Fender Strat for only 40 dollars. The pictures weren't the best quality so I can't tell if it's a Squier or Fender. The ad said it's about five years old, if that helps.

Not to be disrespectful to the Mustang, but you are talking in this opinion, the difference between a proverbial fish sandwich and lobster dinner.

'Bought a Classic Player Jaguar in January of '09. The Jag was SO GOOD, it was replaced with a Limited Edition '62 Reissue Jaguar (Shell Pink), this summer.

The '62 Reissue is magnificent; in this opinion, proof in the hands, eyes and ears, Fender can still make the exact guitars which made those guitars legendary.

I have a '65 Jag and a '65 Mustang and love them both as each is a great guitar and has its own merits and sound but I'd give the Jaguar the edge for tonal variation. The Jaguar neck is super comfortable too.

Lefty Jaguars and Mustangs reissues are out there, but they tend to be a bit expensive. Here's a dealer who sells some of the lefty models imported from Japan (check out the Lake Placid Blue Jag with the matching headstock!)...

I haven't run across too many of these guys on the used market, but hey, you never know!

i was looking at buying a jaguar recently purely because it had humbuckers and i play metal and try to shred as well as the genres you mentioned. It also offers you the chance to split the humbuckers if you want to. However this wasn't meant to be as I found the guitar I really wanted :)

I like the tone of the mustang more after trying both at a local guitar center but i can honestly say the jaguar seems more versatile and was even kurt cobains fave Fender model but if i could choose id take the Mustang just because i love that distinct sound.

My advice is ask some good guitarist to come with you and play the music you like on both and ask him questions about tone, versatility and which will give you what you're looking for.

If you're gonna spend 1000 bucks and cannot try the guitar cuz you're a lefy then at least find the tone you are looking for as that is a great start.
