When the family goes shopping or to a movie, I play at stage volume. You need to know how you will sound when you play live. You also need to know how to control the volume and adjust your right hand technique to that volume.

If you are going to play standing up when you perform, I strongly reccommend that you practice that way as well.

When I can't do these things, my fall back position is usually a battery powered practice amp. I will even play a strat w/o power before I'll not play at all.

um...........what you hear at 10 feet away from your amp can be very different than what they hear out there seated.
small practice room VS a big open room, not a very good comparison.

Parents aren't home, Ampeg Portaflex B12XT (50w tube amp 2x12) at 3/4 volume driven by a proco rat.
Parents are home, Fender Champ to volume 5 ^^

I turn my Vibrochamp to around 9 to try to get the tubes hot. Then dial between 5 and 9 on my Strat. I'm lucky to not have neighbours too close. Still, I make sure the doors and windows are shut.

It sounds better loud.

We have a pasture behind our place and no neighbors close by, so I like to take my '73 Super Reverb out on the deck and crank it up to 8 or 9 and go! If I'm in the house I keep it around 5.

um..........huh?

I am talking about what the amp will sound like on stage. I guess we could talk about the people in the back row if you want. Go for it.

My SuperChamp I play around 7-8, depending on the voice/channel. When I'm practicing on my Marshall, 4 tops.

It's a blast! In fact, when I finished posting that I rolled everything onto the deck and jammed to some backing tracks, big fun! :D Life is good!

your experience must be limited.
amps can sound very different on stage than they can to the folks listening
out and away from the stage.
