All rap isn't bad. Some of it's really good. Like Jay Z, xzibit, NSA, cypress hill....for example. Not every band in rock music is good, there are some really bad ones atm, but there also some really good ones. You cant write off a whole genre just because of some kids no matter how funny it is :)

What is happening to the industry? The same thing that has always happened...homogenized crap gets promoted over good, creative music.

Remember, Little Richard didn't have a hit with "Tutti Frutti"; Pat Boone did. Guess which version sucked?

Likewise, there are good bands out there, but the "safe" bands/artists that are marketable and managable get promoted over a good group/artist that may not be as "pushable" onto the weak-minded consumers...that's why we have Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers, Lady GaGa and Kenny Chesney.

Speaking of weak-minded consumers, have you noticed how bad the current Top 40 Country scene has gotten...it seems that everyone who couldn't make it as a pop artist puts on a cowboy hat, adds a twang to their voice and voila, they're country...mostly it's like listening to Def Leppard with a fiddle tacked on.

Keep your chin up, though--everytime there's a lack of good music, there's a new revolution that changes the rules.

Rock & Roll, the British Invasion, the Blues Boom of the late 60s, (early) metal, Outlaw Country, punk, New Wave, the Blues Boom of the early 80s, shredders, grunge, the rebirth of Outlaw Country--they all came when the music industry was at it's worst.

I'm with you S.A. the vacuous drivel that's being passed off as country these days must have Hank Williams and Snow,Buck Owens and countless other real country artists hitting 30,000 RPM in their graves.

The problem's ( and there are many), with the music industry, are not the fault of rap music. I'm not a fan, but rap, just like death metal or Anne Murray songs , has its place. Until the masses quit getting off on it, it'll always be around. Remember, most of our parents hated the Beatles when they came out and thought that Hendrix just made a lot of noise. Granted, they both made great music, but to the adults in those days, it might as well have been rap. Personally, I don't have a problem with rap as much as people like Taylor Swift. I know she's a great songwriter, but that girl is a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE singer. Pitch correction should be outlawed. If you can't sing, maybe you shouldn't be a professional singer. It shouldn't matter how much money your daddy has or how cute you are.
I'm getting off this soapbox now, I need some six string therapy.

No, I never said I chose rap over Taylor Swift. Of course rappers can't sing, they're not singers, they're rappers. Who cares what they dress like, anyway? Have you seen some of the stuff Hendrix wore? He looked like a strung out circus performer. Or how about ANY of the 80's metal bands, they all looked like drag queens! And don't even get me started about being civilized or belonging in society. How many artist from ALL genres have acted recklessly in public? Been strung out on drugs, fathered numerous illegitimate children or other actions that the "civilized" world wouldn't consider proper. The list is long, here's a short one. Hank Williams Sr & Jr., Hendrix, John Lennon, Ray Charles, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Janis Joplin, David Crosby..............it goes on and on. All these amazing artist created some of the greatest music of all time, but did they do it acting like perfect citizens? No. Hell, rocks creedo has always been, Sex, drugs and rock and roll what does that say about the artist in that genre? You could argue this point for ever, but the fact of the matter is that it's called pop music because it's POPular to the masses and until the masses are given something to turn their ears away from rap, it'll keep winning at the awards show. So, the moral here is this: Turn off the computer, go out get your guitar and create something we can't quit listening to. Peace.

cant write???????? rap (and i mean good rap...eminem, big pun, run dmc, tupac, etc.) is 10 x HARDER to write than rock... sure you dont always need t make completely new melodies, but the lyrics are several pages long! listen to some eminem (not the stupid "im slim shady" crap... the album tracks that the teenie boppers dont even know) and then try to say he cant write.

Country music died with Jerry Reed.

dude rap isnt anything like it use to be.
hell they even make up words just to complete a sentence.
most all of it is the same ole story over and over again. same 5 topics.
back in the 80s when it first arrived yeah it was cool. it was very different and they had something to say. today, most of them suck.

I'm sorry but I find the complete dismissal of any genre a terrible crime.
Not only do you dismiss what hasn't been heard, you diminish the validity of said artists influences and roots.
When that comes to rap, it's well worth searching it's origins. Scat, jive and bebop. Which in turn came from the cotton fields.
I hear a lot of rap in this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fc1wr3dYxU&feature=related

Anyways I agree with Zappa, the hippies ruined the music industry. To paraphrase him, cos I can't remember it word for word.
No one had a clue what the youth wanted before the mid to late 60's. So they'd give anything a try. The record company bosses started employing hip kids as A&R men. From that moment on we were forced to listen to someone elses tastes.

Thats whats wrong with the industry. I can't wait for the day piracy sucks all the money out of it and brings it back down to where it should be. Live on a stage. Instead of paying for some suit to pick all our music for us.

[EDIT] Heres that Zappa interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZazEM8cgt0&feature=fvsr

No further than some of the Hendrix or Cream recordings is away from their origins though.
No one has a catalogue without red face embarrassing moments. AstroMan or As You Said for instance. There's good reason the majority of Hendrix's catalogue was released posthumously. The majority of it just wasn't good enough. I don't include the Noel Redding tracks on Axis and Ladyland in that. It's clear that Hendrix was trying to placate him in some way. How many years did Clapton find that Cream stuff very cringeworthy?

I'd have to agree that modern rap is just egotistical, macho, nonsense with about as much artistry as what my dog leaves in the garden. Thank you Sony, Warner and all you other accountants. De La Soul and to some extent NWA were absolute genius though. Originality, melody and rhythm.

like i said the original stuff was good. kool mo dee, ll cool jay, eric b, rakim, run dmc, kid and play, grand master flash, just to name a few.

they did good with it and did some great story telling. slick rick was another great artist. its since become garbage for the most part,
something i dont think the originals intended it to be.
i dont take any credit away from the founding fathers of rap.
