A couple of younger fellas I know through friends invited me to join them on a motorcycle trip into the British Columbia interior. We're leaving tomorrow morning for 6 days of adrenaline rush. I grew up there (in BC) and these guys have never ridden there before so I guess my function will be sort of a guide. I don't care what my function is this is going to be one cool ride and I am getting so stoked about it! It's been a year since I last rode those rollercoasters they call roads over there. I used to have this hardcover book that listed the top 10 places to ride in the world with detailed maps, glossy pics, points of interest, regional history, restaurants, B&Bs, etc. and the BC Kootenays ranked 3rd. I spent every summer weekend in my late teens and early twenties that I could spare riding those hilly twisties and I still try to ride them at least once a year. More if I can. There's nothing quite like it. I rode the Oregon coast in '02 and I did some canyon riding in SoCal winter of '04 and those are great too but I still prefer BC.

The part that's really got me grinning from ear to ear is the anticipation of the looks on these young studs faces when I leave them in my geezer dust. They may be young and strong and have fast bikes but they're still Alberta farm boy flatlanders used to straight roads and I have 35 years worth of experience riding the mountains and these mountains were my back yard for most of my life. I won't push them too hard though. I don't need the hassle of having to explain to their parents why they came home with road rash and missing signal lights.

Ever been up to Osoyoos? There are some nice winding roads there.

I love driving through Alberta / BC.

Sask.... not so much!

Yah, the trip down the hill going west from Bridesville down into the OK Valley at osoyoos can be quite good riding. It's even better about an hour west of Osoyoos after Princeton when you get into the Manning Park and start winding your way up to the summit. Still that pales in comparison to the section on Hwy 6 between Silverton and New Denver. Severe elevation fluctuations both up and down and not a straight piece of asphalt to be found. Lots of diminishing radius corners though and those can really get the blood pumping. You think maybe you braked too hard for the corner and start rolling the throttle on only to suddenly find out that you are WAY too hot. Sometimes the skid marks aren't just on the pavement. Sometimes they're also in your drawers.

Ride safe, keep the rubber side down, and take lots of pictures.

And when you get back we can talk about getting you a proper motorcycle like mine.

After all, there are only two motorcycles in the world, a Harley Davidson, and all the other that wish they were. :D

Just rolled in a couple hours ago. Cool trip. The boys turned out to be reasonably competant riders I was impressed by how safety conscious they were. We rode fast and hard considering the conditions but they didn't pull any stunts. It was cool and wet for almost the whole trip but we had a load of fun anyway. I made sure a few days before we left that they both had good rain gear just in case. Good thing too. We spent one night in Banff and had supper and a few beers in this bar that had live music. It was a Led Zeppelin tribute band. They did a pretty good job of it. Had the stage moves and the hair and wardrobes down pat too. It was pretty clear they put a lot of thought and effort into it. They were all really, really skinny buggers. The kind of skinny that it sometimes take two full grown men just to see them on a clear day. I pulled the Robert Plant wannabe aside at the first break and told him they should change their band name to Four Sticks. I don't think he got it but I sure chuckled.
