Ditto on that score. Just returned from Seattle visiting family and was out of touch with the news. First I'd heard of it was on the return flight via one of the new channels and immediately thought of you but was not sure if you were located in that town. Seattle sits on a little ditty known as the Cascadia Fault, long overdue, and a veritable nightmare in the waiting.

Niki's pretty much summed it all up with his map. You're right in the pipeline and the volcanic history of the islands speaks for themselves. When I have a spare moment I'll review the entire thread.

Presently, duty calls, but again, good to learn that all is well with you.

Doc.

That was quite an interesting history. The towns around Mount Rainier conduct lahar drills on a regular basis. The possibilities of unexpected mudflows are greater than eruption issues. The mountain is constantly monitored and any movement of magma underground would be detected. Glacial melt mixing with the stuff of which Rainier is built creating mudflows is another issue. Towns such as Orting WA have about an hour's time to get people to high ground once the sensor system in place detects movement.

The link in Niki's post addresses the Cascadia Subduction zone in detail. Sitting on a time bomb is a pretty realistic description of what the region can anticipate. I have concerns for family and friends out that way. If it goes, given the anticipated earth movements and resultant tsunamis, it will make Haiti's event look like a Sunday picnic.

I have vacationed on the Oregon coast and have seen the tsunami escape route signs posted in key areas in coastal communities. The awareness exits, for sure.

It's important alright. People have lost their homes in communities that have been either flattened or damaged beyond all economical repair.

Can you imagine what you would do if you woke at 4am, your house started swaying side to side to the point it nearly falls down. In the early hours of the morning you didnt know what was happening, you panic and you ran for the door leaving your house only to find that the next day, you couldnt collect your belongings because the house was soo damaged, any off balance would cause the structure to fall or even worse cause injuries?

How about this- not being able to drive to the nearest town because your garage has fallen onto your car and crushed it?

How about having sleep that's constantly interupted every few hours by magnatude 5 aftershocks that are shallow deep just kilometres where you live, for the last week?

Or looking around in what used to be a community, only to think to yourself "How on earth is this going to be sorted in a country where labour shortages are rife?" "When is MY house going to be rebuilt?" Obviously people cannot rebuild untill the aftershocks are gone, both specialist seizmologists in NZ Australia and USA have established will be weeks to months yet.

However, it has done nothing to the spirit of the people.. infact it has brought many together

People are just leaving their neighbourhoods now as though the thought of a new city being built is all exciting, people want solutions for the families now. They have had enough. People are beginning to realise that the clean-up will take years to do, and the best thing is to just leave- regardless of where you may go or the fact you actually have nowhere but a car and a few blankets.

So it is very important to have a plan. because when the disaster strikes and you dont have a plan, you'd better hope luck is on your side. In our case the people of Cantubury can count their lucky stars that it happened when people were fast asleep, and not during the working day otherwise there would have been many fatalities.

Also, anyone who lives near an eathquake prone region, hell- you are sitting on a timebomb. Not like a volcanoe where you have a warning, eathquakes will strike at anytime, anywhere and they dont discriminate aqnd they have the potential to cause mass destruction in a matter of minutes. They even occur where people think there are no fault lines. Nobody is exempt from anything happening to them. You actually have better chance than winning lottery in some places of the world- be it earthquakes, tsunami, typhoon, cyclone, fire, war famine or disease.

People get caught up too much in their lives, over petty things and complain about things that they cannot control. People moan if they have it, they will moan if they dont. People dont appreciate that some people have very little, if nothing at all- and live in fear of there lives. What was to happen if it was all to be here one day, gone the next? It will happen to anybody, anytime.

Peace out

B

I really hope you haven't misinterpreted what I wrote. I wasn't trying to say that this horrible situation is viewed as unimportant. I was trying to make the point that there are earthquakes going on all the time all over the world. We just don't hear about em because their small things. We hear about these mega disasters and suddenly were all woke up to them again.

You antipodean fellah's will come through this. You're tough as old boots.
Good that the community spirit is strong eh?

Dont sweat it- nothing was misinterpreted. My last post wasnt aimed at anyone- just want to let people know whats happening.

Tell you what though- a bar owner down there just re-opened his bar after a week of non-trade yesterday. He actually said lastnight was the best day of trade since he has been open! He must have waited till the kegs stopped throffing.

So what yer reckon Nik? maybe we could use more people with your handy expertise. I wouldnt mind betting that there will be opening the gates to tradepeople. If you wanna come down- bring a slab of beer wont ya?

But a sad story though- a local supermarket had to be demolished on thursday (hasnt even been open very long!) and employees had to be laid off because the building was entirely ruined in the earthquake. Tinned food, even had to be dumped would you believe. crazy

Tell ya what mate, the waste managment for the demolished buildings must be absolutely staggering.
What the hell would you do with all that rubble. Ok I reckon you'd get about 10% or reusable material. What you gonna do with the other 90%?7

Push it out to sea and use it as a bit of an extension? (JK)

Thanks though mate, you have just given me a job option. Sincerely thankyou. I wonder if CV fancies a trip out?
