In my opinion, most of the "AMP" modelers work best played through a keyboard amp, or direct and not through a guitar amp. So getting one for the effects may be overkill and might not be what you are looking for. If you just want some effects and have an amp already, maybe stomp boxes would be a better choice.

That said, there are quite a bit of multi-effects that are worth looking into. You really have alot of options now-a-days.

I got a Boss ME-20 and it seems to be just what I needed. Not too much, just the basics.

To me models either walk the runway, pose in magazines/catalogs, are on TV, or are something you put together to get high off the glue. Modelling amps are not as enjoyable to me as all those other things involving models. Stomp boxes are the way to go. Modelling amps are like the huge Swiss Army knives with too much extra crap you will barely use and just get stuck with carrying around.

For what it's worth, even though I've been playing for more years than I care to mention- I'm sort of "old school" and never really got into pedals- multi effects or single stomp boxes. I recently decided to give it a try and asked some folks on this board- the majority seemed to prefer individual stomp boxes and that is the way I'm going- so far I have 4 pedals, overdrive/distortion/chorus/phaser/ and I'm looking to add maybe a wah or compressor. I'm glad I went this route- you just tap what you want without going through a myriad of menus. and tapping more than one pedal gives you some cool "multi-effects" -it works for me- and I love all the pretty colors!!

I'd say stomp boxes, it might cost a little more but you can get a lot more of the exact sound you want with a stomp box.

I'm always for individual pedals. Better quality sound then modelers and much easier to use then multi-effects pedals. If you're performing, individual pedals are the way to go. One tap and your effect is on or off. With a multi pedal you've got to change banks, choose effect..too much footwork. And there's also the lag that multi pedals have. I hate choosing an effect and then having to wait half a second for the effect to kick in.

delay.

An analogue one if you can afford it, or a Boss DD3.
You might consider a multi-effects like a Zoom G2 or a Boss ME30.

Stomp boxes :!:

They tend to not over process the sound.

Also, they are not trying to be "one size fits all."

It all depends on your price range. Most stompboxes will sound better because they are only built for one sound so they do that one thing and they do it good. MultiFx processors don't sound the best compared to most stompboxes, but they still sound alright and you can do a lot more with them.

Personally I use a Line 6 MM4. it has 14 different presets of flanger, chorus, wah, phaser, tremolo, etc. Each preset is also completely tweakable. You can store your 4 favorite into 4 different bays and swtich between them without fiddling with knobs which is great live. It doesn't sound as great as if you were to get the individual pedals, but it still sounds good. They have similar processors for delays and other effects too. I have the DL4 for all delays and MM4 for modulations and they work great together.

I didn't like most other multi-fx processors they all sounded cheap and compromising their sound.

If you arent sure you might just want to get a multifx processor and see what you like. If you start loving flange then you know you might want to invest in a nice flanger stompbox. Otherwise if you have some money just get a few nice stompboxes right away.
