i have noticed lately that TONS of gear on ebay completed items is just not moving at all. maybe 1 in 50 guitars are listed as sold.

I can't determine if this is due to the world economy being in the toilet, or the total worldwide commoditization of ebay - perhaps a massive oversupply of used equipment reaching critical mass.

What i was wondering was from 2000 - 2010 what was the peak of the vintage market in both moving units and top price?

I remember paying 1000US for a mint condition mustang in 2001 at a time when they were averaging 650-700US. they seem to be averaging a couple of grand today, but not moving as fast. is it the same for big ticket strats and teles?

i have noticed that too. i think one of the reasons is that sellers obviously want more than the market dictates. i have seen used amps listed for prices that are close to new prices. i would spend a little more for a new amp to get a warranty.

I agree that sellers are looking for higher prices than they should be. As with many things today, there is a gap between the price sellers are willing to pay and the price buyers are willing to accept. I think it is a combination of the economy and unrealistic seller expectations.

Another one here that can't believe the extortionate prices of used equipment.
Used prices should be at maximum around 60% of the new price. Look at cars, they lose atleast 20% as soon as you've signed the paperwork.

In concurrence.

It is not just at ebay, but even at places like yard sales and other venues like kiji.

I think it can be called the antique roadshow syndorme. For some reason people have become very greedy and think their old stuff is worth almost full price if not more than they originally paid for it.

Lately I am finding the best prices for used gear have been at the music shops I haunt.

A good example of this is the prices of the Joe Strummer Tele on Ebay. I've seen them sell/listed for $600 up to $950. My local GC has a new JS Tele on the rack for sale for $600. Strange.....

i have also noticed that some people are calling 10 year old amps "vintage". especially solid state models that are plentiful.

some of these amps look kind of beat- some not even cleaned up.

sometimes i see amps with a start price of 99 cents- but shipping is high

then there are amps that have a bad reputation for quality. i have read many stories of issues with certain models, especially dsp editions. hard to find parts, expesive repairs, etc.

when an amp does come up at a decent price, i also wonder if others are looking at and seeing something wrong. it makes me wait till the last second before bidding.

i have noticed some decent pricing on the guitar center used site. a few months ago i noticed that my local g.c. had a boss me-50 for sale at 149. 2 days later i went to look at it. it was in perfect shape, and came with the power supply. played around with it for about 1/2 hour. the guy comes up to me and tells me the price was just dropped to 99 bucks, so i snapped it up.

just as i finished the transaction, someone walked in who just saw the price drop. he was bummed to learn it was just sold.
