It's no secret that I'm a devout John Lennon/Beatles fanatic as he strated me down the path to being a musician.I still have a hard time playing or listening to some of his songs such as In My Life and Happy Christmas(The War Is Over) not because they're difficult but they are so emotional and he has so much heart in them that I get quite choked up when I hear them or try to play them. One song in particular that I find extremely hard to play or sing is This Boy,I can nail all the notes, even in the high part of the chorus but I just get too wound up emotionally to be able to sing it. Just to listen to John sing it and hear the heart wrenching angst in his voice when he hits the high part of the chorus just rips me up to this day. Anyone else have songs that affects them like that?Voodoo Child(slight return)-Jimi's version-can do it depending on my mood also.

(Just Like) Starting Over from Double Fantasy. That was the single getting airplay when he was killed. Everytime I hear it I'm teleported back to the morning of December 9, 1980. I'm standing in my kitchen getting ready for work with the radio tuned to WNBC. I got the bad news from Don Imus.

Guitslinger i totally get what you mean, though i am an atrocious singer.

the thing with Lennon, and some others, is although maybe not the slickest technician on the fretboard he was a vastly under-rated player. He had a unique touch, and an almost lyrical use of dynamics in his touch and attack.
It's easy to hit the notes in most of his songs, but getting the feel, and the different subtleties to his approach is a huge challenge.

i think guys like him, and heck, i'll even include Roger McGuinn really show that there is a lot more to mastering the guitar than virtuoso speed and accuracy, there is also a whole galaxy of embellishments and varieties of attack to explore.

You got that right Twelvebar John was one of the absolute best rhythm players ever to hold a guitar and his lead work was pretty tasty too such as in Get Back and his lead part when they switch leads on the medley on side 2 of Abby Road is unmistakeable.

All 3 were no slouches on the guit box. Whenever people ask whether I preferred John's or Paul's stuff, i have a hard time answering, but if totally honest, my absolute favorite stuff is George's material. But all of them wrote such strong material, and their personalities shone through, it's almost like on any given day one or the others' material will better suit my mood, and on that day that one is my favorite.

As I type this I am listening to the first Traveling Wilburys album. A lot of talent passed in those two late members.

The guy for me who I think is vastly underrated (in my very very humble opinion) and probably my favourite guitar player is John Frusciante. Whilst his playing generally has nowhere near the speed and technicality of many other guitarists, he seems to pick the right notes and timing that stirs something up inside of me. Some of his guitar work on the By The Way album, especially in the songs later in the album that were not released as singles, for me is amazing.

The song Change by Blind melon always gets me, and now Beautiful Boy by John Lennon after the birth of my son.

John wrote Beautiful Boy shortly after Sean was born,it's too bad that Julian didn't receive the adulation that Sean did. That's one thing that I'll never understand about John.A lot of people blame Yoko for Julian getting very little from John's estate but she was just honoring Juhn's wishes.I'll never get my head around that aspect of John's persona as he was so caring and interested in Sean but was indifferent and sometimes even hostile towards Julian.John was a very headstrong man and I doubt very much that Yoko turned him against Julian as he was aloof in his dealings with Julian long before Yoko came into his life.Maybe his own abandonment by his father and his mother's death caused some deep rooted emotional problem and he gave Julian the same treatment that he received. That would be a great study for a thesis.
