i am new to playing electric guitar after about ten years of playing an acoustic. currently i have a mim strat and an epiphone valve junior head and cab. i love my amp but it has no effects...so i thought i should pick up a pedal. i mostly play blues, country, rockabilly, soul and classic rock. I have decided to either buy a boss fbm-1 or an ibanez tube screamer ts808. which one should i buy?

Go with the TS-808. I've been using it forever and love it.

Go with the TS-808. It's one of the best overdrives for a tube amp you can get. I wouldn't even think about getting anything else. The TS9 is alright, but you can definitely tell the difference between that and a true 808.

I love using delay, it can add a lot more depth to your sound. I've been using a Line 6 DL4 for years and love it. It has 14 (or 12 I can't remember exactly) different delays from tube to tape head to digital and reverse.... plus each is completely tweakable. IT has a looper built in also. That is the most versitile pedal I have ever owned. If you just want a simple delay that can do anything the Boss DD-6 or a EHX Deluxe Memoryman are good too.

While the TubeScreamer is one of the most popular, you will want to try 'em out and see which one does it for you.

There is also the "Bad Monkey" from Digitech that is cheap and works great.

Hehe- that's interesting- I have a MIM strat and the Epi vlave head and cab also :)
I was in the same situation- didn't feel like modding the amp so I went the effects route- currently I have a DOD chorus, Boss DS-1 , Digitech Bad Monkey overdrive, and Digitetech Hyper Phase. Fair warning tho- once you start with the pedals it's hard to stop! I'm looking to add either a delay, reverb or compressor...oh yeah and maybe a Wah....HELP!!!

Along those tonal lines, but with (absolute) respect to the fore mentioned pedals, check out the (Guitar Player Magazine) award winning (Direct Drive & Tone Press) Barber Electronics pedals. This is not the case of reinventing the wheel, but a refinement of desirable sounds.

Example: TS808 or Barber LTDv2 (low gain overdrive). The Barber has “The v2 adds a little more bass, less mids and a bit more open on top...”

They were originally designed with a Fender 'early' Silver Face Super Reverb combo. Although they have the flexibility (via internal and some external adjustments) to work with your amplifier.

I work with numerous guitarists on 'Blues/ R&B' gigs who use Fender tube combos in various configurations (Fender Blues Jr., Fender Super Reverb, Fender Deluxe, etc...) with excellent results.

These are precise, professional tone shaping tools, not "Jack of all trades, master of none." Please just use a search engine. The reputation precedes them.

The tube screamer is a fantastic pedal - very versatile, from subtle body to gutsy blues. A great choice.

I would try diffrent pedals and see which one sounds the best to you.
In my case after trying about 10 to 12 different distortion pedals (overdrive, distortion, fuzz) my favorite was the 808 reissue and I bought it. It gave me the sweet classic overdrive sound I was looking for.
Don't be afraid to try a bunch of pedals until you find the right one for you.

i want to thank everyone for their advice. when i went to my local guitar center i was planning on buying the ibanez ts-808, but they didn't have it in stock....so i bought the fbm-1 instead. the nice thing about it was that it was on sale for $129.99. so far i like the fbm-1 especially the clean setting. some time in the future i will get the ts-808. thanks again.....

Maxon out of Japan made the original Tube Screamers for Ibanez. They put out their own stuff now. They have a large range of overdrive pedals from TS-808's to beefier Tube Screamer on steriods pedals like the Sonic Distortion. They use the best componets and bucket brigade chips. Good stuff...
