I recently bought a little Fender Frontman 25R to take along with me when I travel which is about two weekends a month. The only effect the amp has is reverb so I thought that I would buy a couple of small pedals. I stopped in at Guitar Center and bought a Dunlop Crybaby, a Boss Ch-1 Super Chorus, and a DeltaLab Digital Delay. Well two of the pedals, the Boss Ch1 and the DeltaLab Delay are going back on saturday. Firstly, the BOSS Ch1 is defective and does not work. Secondly, the DeltaLab Delay sounds terrible even to my untrained ears.

I was hoping to recreate the effects that my G-Dec 3 uses for preset number 25 which uses chorus, delay and reverb. I just like the sound of that setting for practice. Does anyone have any suggestions on basic pedals to look for and ones to avoid? I am working my way through the Metal Method and Learn and Master Guitar courses so I don't really have a style of music yet that I play. I am just looking for some basic effects to play with and I would appreciate any assistance.

The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver is a great pedal. About $80

+1

For a little more "grind" you might give the Pro Co Rat or the Bad Monkey a try.

Too bad your Boss pedal is defective. They are built like tanks and last for years. Try exchanging it for another one.

I have no idea what patch #25 on the GDEC3 sounds like or what your budget for pedals, but the MXR Carbon Copy is a sweet analog delay. But if you need some super long delay times you might want to go digital. Aren't DeltaLab pedals Guitar Center's cheapo housebrand, yeah no wonder you didn't like the sound. Luckily you can return it. Digitech makes some nice digital delay pedals.

One piece of advice is to buy used on craigslist, ebay, garage sale, whatever. That way if you don't like the pedal, you can resell it for the same or more than what you paid for it and move on to the next one without losing out.

I'd suggest sticking with the tried and true big names while starting out like Boss, Digitech, MXR. Electro-Harmonix pedals are fun at first cuz they make lots of funky sounds, but some are quirky and noisy as heck. Avoid any pedal in a plastic case instead of metal. And don't get caught up in the expensive boutique pedal hype $$$ until you know exactly what your tone needs.

Really like my Boss Blues Driver, For another, check out the BBE Crusher. I like it because it has treb mid and bass eq on board, Plus very good gain and volume. For Chorus I like the Boss models, and for Delay, Again BBe two timer is great, as well as the Boss dd3 or 7

The Danelectro Cool Cat pedals are quite good and are in the $50-$60 range. They make a great chorus pedal as well as tremolo and vibrato, their overdrive pedals are supposed to be very good too.A great distortion pedal is the Marshall Guv'nor and Electro Harmonix makes some great delay pedals at very reasonable prices.

for a chorus i would suggest an electro harmonix small clone... i got one for my birthday a couple weeks ago and LOVE it... it sounds GREAT and its simple to operate yet extremely versatile.... use batteries instead of AC though, it sounds better IMO

I like Boss pedals very much. I have a DD3 which I have set for slapback.

In addition to Boss pedals, the Ibanez TS-9 is great for mild OD thru significant crunch.

I am going to clue you in to one of the greatest unknown pedals going,,,,

http://www.guitarfetish.com/GFS-Footpedals_c_207.html

I have the greenie, great drive pedal, the two I would suggest to you would be the Pro delay and the pro chorus.

Use the link and click in them there are sound clips to listen too. There a great deal because you are buying them strait from the manufacture.
They are built like a tank, solid metal.

+1 RVM, get yourself a TS-9 and a Boss DD3... that should keep you happy for a while.

i wil suggest 3 types of pedals and give a great example of each.

1, overdrive pedal. fulltones OCD. easly the best on the market.
2, a delay pedal. MXR carbon copy.
3, compressor BOSS

these will get you started on the right foot. from hereyour on your own.
my board has about 20 pedals on it. its all about personal tastes and needs/wants.

To be honest, if I could go back in time to the point where I was a beginner, I would have just bought 1 quality electric and a small quality tube amp. Would have saved me a lot of money, time and hassle. Or I would have just got an acoustic. Anyhow, enough of my hindsight bias <_< My thought is: The G-DEC a relatively portable amp, the heaviest one is 27.3 lbs and it's built to take some abuse. I mean I thought the whole idea was to emulate the sound of a full rig without all the pedal mess, why not just take it on your travels and save your money towards other gear? o_O If anything, perhaps one or two used pedals like a Boss DS-1 or a Danelectro (You can find em for leik $20 bucks or less used ^^) would be fine, because I've been down the road of throwing $100+ pedals in front of $150 solid state amps and would advise you against such endeavors ^^

If you are wanting a Heavy Metal sound I recommend either a boss metal zone or metal core. As far as delay I recommend either a boss dd7 or MXR Cabon copy. Guitar Center should have an effects demo rack and I recommend you play around with that.

Also, have you tried to change out the battery on the Boss CH1? Sometimes the battery that comes with it does not work. It depends how long the pedal has been there ad to whether the battery is working.
