i've missed a few too many practices lately because of weekend work. we need the money. i work in this texas heat 6-7 days a week and it drains the life from me. sometimes i just don't feel like jammin' on suday.
my problem is that there is an outstanding guitar player who is a family friend. he has mentioned wanting to sit in. i'm going to ask the guys if they'd like to let him take my place. work will slow down now since school has started but we have some good, big jobs signed that i know i want a peice of. what would ya'll do?
it's very hard to pass up extra money but i also love music. music don't pay the bills.

Don't give up your spot mate, please don't do it. The guys in your band must understand how hot it is, they presumably live in the same area. Unless you're earning megabucks it's no real stress, is it?

I'm quite lucky to live in a cold climate. But I can tell you that southern European's don't really go to gigs in the summertime, not like they do in the winter. You'll get a few who will make the effort, most can't be bothered through the heat.

Have a talk to your band, summer's almost over. Explain to em what's been going on. Offer to let your mate sit in, only on the proviso that you will return.

In this economy, you've have to take the money while you it is there. Your bandmate would surely understand that, especially since music is not payig the bills and the missed practices maybe causing a problem. Have the friend sit in and see if you can do a "cover for me" kind of deal for a bit. Then it will be up to your band to say yea or nay.

Good luck either way

+1
jeebus, cool idea giving some one you know an opportunity to play. Niki has the best idea, talk to the band and tell them you can play again after your work is back to normal.

Hi Jeebus, the other guys are right, give your buddy the opportunity to fill in for you that way you're not burning any bridges and you can go back to it when the time is right.Good Luck.

Hi jeebus

I know it's kind of long shot since I am not familiar with your situation, but you can try to make jam sessions schedule more flexible or work schedule more flexible? I know economy is tough and you gottadewwhatyougottadew
working 6 days long shifts will burn you out.

i have a friend who calls me once in a while when his guitar player can't make a gig. we are good friends, and neither of us do the music thing because of money. he started the band, and knows i'm not trying to repace him.

i have seen it happen, however, when a temporary replacement comes in, and he's better than the other guitarist. it can create problems.

talk with your band, and hopefully it will all work out for everybody

i'm going to contact our drummer this evening about my concerns. truth is, we really don't need to practice every week unless we're trying new tunes. we don't have any gigs lined up. it's like calling in sick when your not really sick. i can usually handle working long weeks but this heat and humidity here has got me feeling my age.
thanx for the kind words and advice. besides, there are worse things that could be going on right now. i feel lucky to have 2 jobs and a band to play in. i just wish i had the energy.

Nobody ask you to quit. It will be cool soon. Keep the gig.

i addressed my concerns with the drummer who is kind of our leader. he assured me that the guys understand i'm not ditching practice because i'm lazy. it seems that the other "new" guitar player is quite picky and maybe not a good replacement.
i am somewhat relieved but still quite worn out. i guess it's time to suck it up and just do it. i can rest down the road.
good advice everyone.
