I confess I have drooled on my Squier Strat more than once. But I've done it to my Fender Tele as well, so it's definitely not just a Squier thing. 8)

Can anybody remember the 'Pro Tone' series in the mid-late nineties?

There was a model with a FR bridge, gold hardware, HSS set up in black only- with matching headstock. I think they were a winner!

I like the classic vibe too- If I was in the market, it would be for a Tele thinline in shoreline gold, or the John 5 model.

Two points to consider with ANY guitar. They are as good as they way you play them. Ive seen a virtuoso play a squier, and I have seen a beginner play one too. Same instrument, one play running up and down the fretboard, the other just learning his first few chords.

The other- quality. These days, you get a good level of quality at any level in the range. The same in the early nineties when I was learning playing guitar- but if you strayed from Fender for the same amount of dollars the quality sharply dropped. i.e- if you want the quality of a guitar made from select woods- then a 'begginers player pack' aint for you, but thats not to say it wont be good anyway!

Hey, I admit, I own and play a Squier Affinity Strat and I love that guitar! It sounds great and plays great. I have gigged with it and even recorded with it  . I also own Fender Strats and Teles. IMO the folks who bag on Squiers generally are label conscious and have never taken the time to set it up right. I spent about 3 hours doing a good setup and well, I will never get rid of that little gem.

Me too! Well, not recorded, but I have played with a large jazz/big band band and any kind of Strat just sounds great for that. I love 'em.

I've got a few squiers on my gas list, but they aren't very high up it.

Squier is great.

And besides, musicianship is 100% in the hands and mind. Most famous jazz concert ever, Charlie Parker played a plastic sax.

Not to open a "can o' worms", but I respect the Squier brand name more than I respect the MIM Fender name.

I think the "crap talkers" just look at the lower price tag and assume that the instruments are poor quality.

I paid $360 for it in 1984,white with a slab board neck.Played it a lot .6 years I got a Arch Top ( Samik Greg Bennett la Salle Jz2).Love that guitar. 2 years ago I got a mim 50's style strat. Love it to death. I had to have the frets dressed. So I pulled out the old 84.. WOW! Its is very good guitar. All my bros in the bands always looked on the Squire.. Cuz its..well a Squire Strat..I tell you, close your eyes and just play it..You wont know what name is on it... Like the man said "love the one your with".. Mark

well now i guess its my turn to speak up. I do not hate squier at all, i just hate mine. After playing my Value pack, i realized the materials were cheap, and i needed constant tuning. That made me realize i have to get a new guitar and amp. I like my strat, but however, to improve my old strat would cost a lot. my budget is very very low, so i guess i have to sell it. I am planning to get a les paul, because i know it would be a much more reliable guitar to practice and experiment with. I can't even get a hard rock/punk sound out of the amp.i cranked up everything(except volume otherwise it'll be too loud) and still, no dice. But i still didn't hate squier although i couldn't find the sound i was looking for. In conclusion, i support squier for making low priced guitars and basses with quality(Not all of them, but most).

btw this may sound like a school essay i am writing but its not. so no comments about it. thnx

guitslinger's advice is the best, play your Strat through a pro rig ( even a smaller Fender amp or Vox amp you will notice the difference ) and you will get the sounds that you want to hear from your guitar.

that is a great idea...but i want to really bring out something hardcore, more of a hard rock/punk sound and i want to get a guitar that will deliver that. i could however change pick ups on my squier, but it would cost more than a amp.

btw is there any music store that doesn't allow for me to sell a sp 10?(squiers "value" amp)

ok mark but when i play my strat it feels like i'm playing a bendy stringed guitar. i felt like the strings weren't good enough for what i am expecting--i'm also looking for a solid practice but i can't even fulfill some of that because what was provided. i do wish that the strat would be A strat, but ,modifications would punch a hole in the wallet and thats never good.

so i'm going to cash in for a epiphone sg or les paul

Squiers are great, but they are just like pro wrestling and relics...For those that believe, no explanation is needed, and for those who don't believe, no explanation will ever be good enough.

Well, my friend, it seems to me that you're a humbucker kind of guy, and that Squier and the strat you have is not your cup of tea. That's all! It's not Squier's fault, nor it's yours either, it's just the way it is. You don't like single coils much. That's my opinion on this after going through all of the posts. You can either install humbucker(s) on your strat or let it go and buy a Les Paul, an SG or any guitar with humbuckers. I personally prefer single coils, I just don't like too much midrange.

Enjoy your future "humbucker guitar"!

Goran

yes and i have agree to sell my squier and my amp to get a humbucker guitar(Sg, Les paul).i just need time to experiment something that could be used towards the punk flavor. Although later on i may return to get a fender hss standard or a squier 72(got p 90 pick ups and looks nice.

theFailGuitarist, have you thought of putting 13s on your Squire, then set it up, proper, action tight and pick-up height adjusted close. now, go through your punk jams dimed see if it helps.
